stay away! my husband and I both ordered steaks and grilled veggies. my husband’s steak arrived room temperature and raw inside(he ordered«medium») and my steak arrived still frozen(literally!). when they brought it back after cooking it some more, it was now warm on the outside but still *completely* raw inside(i also ordered«medium»). The grilled veggies were cooked but completely cold. Notably, the table next to us also received frozen steaks but somehow serving frozen steaks to one table didn’t prompt them to pay extra attention to other orders. we were almost late to our show that night because the food had to be sent back twice. what’s worse, the staff was not particularly apologetic. oh and they forgot my potatoes. ugh, don’t go there.

Aún no aceptan tarjeta de crédito y/o débito lo que le resta puntos ya que no es un lugar barato como para traer mucha lana en efectivo. Ordered Chorizo for starter, Rib Eye steak for main and cheese cake(?) for dessert and an espresso and an americano. Steak and chorizo sausage were cooked to perfection and nicely seasoned. Dessert was not too sweet and perfect to go along with the coffee that is also very nice.

Go-Tan Anteriormente fui a este Restaurante de comida Argentina y hoy no podía dejar pasar la oportunidad de volver a repetir la experiencia en el Gotan de Revillagigedo en el Centro con la invitación de Vivianita una mujer excepcional y muy cálida y servicial. Hoy en esta Unilocal Pachanga vuelvo a revivir los sabores tan exquisitos de la comida que hacen en este lugar tan peculiar donde degusté unas ricas empanadas y el famosísimo choripanes de este lugar y ni que decir del helado tan rico que ahora preparan. Le doy un diez al Gotan y al servicio de los meseros por atenderlos tan bien esta noche. Lo pase muy agusto y por supuesto que aquí me tendrán muy seguido.

After reading amazing reviews here and elsewhere, my husband and went to celebrate his birthday. We were excited to find a good Argentine restaurant in the center where we live. The service was excellent, but I must say this is by no means the best Argentine food in Mexico City. The tiny, old bread they gave us to begin was a first bad sign, followed by the so-so Choripan. We shared the veal arrachera, which tasted like it was previously frozen, and definitely not cooked medium like we requested. I do recommend the dessert and potatoes(which are basically delicious seasoned fries), which are very tasty. The food isn’t bad, but it really isn’t as good as we were expecting– especially since all the reviews raved about it.

Found this place just walking around. It could be easily missed but it’s well worth finding this little gem. The service was pleasant and gracious. The food spoke for itself. I had the house salad and steak and could not have asked for a better meal. The steak was cooked to perfection and the house dressing was just right! If in the nearby area, stop in for sure!

I had to go to Mexico City for a few days for work. I wanted to find a really special, authentic place for my boyfriend and I to eat that had great food, attentive service and was an experience that we would not soon forget… and we found it at all, and then some, at Gotan! The staff was so nice and helpful. Even though they were very attentive it still felt as if we were having a private secluded dinner. Everything we shared, from the Empanadas to the chorizo to the Argentine beef dishes, was our favorite and the best we’d ever had. My boyfriend, who is not a big salad eater, even fought me over the salad — their vinaigrette has magic dust in it I think… I would highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for an evening to remember off the beaten path — great food, great service and once you step foot around the corner a great view of the Monument to the Revolution. You can’t beat it. Thanks Gotan!

I selected this restaurant as a surprise for my novia on Valentine’s Day. I was in Mexico City for customer meetings and researched dozens of beautiful restaurants, each a legend in their own way, but something drew me to Gotan. I initially contacted them by e-mail and outlined my plan for the special surprise evening. Nothing can prepare you for the sensations which await you at Gotan. The customized menu created by the owners for our special evening was simply magnificent. Many more capable writers can describe the olfactory and gustatory sensations. I will only say that the combination of appetizers, salad, food, wine, and of course dessert rank in my top 10 dining experiences of all time(including Windows on the World(1999), Aubergine, Gary Denko, Spago and French Laundry).

We spent some days in Mexico in December for a research trip and were truly happy to find this nice and friendly place close to our hotel. The food was amazing(meaty, as one would expect from an argentinian place) and the staff was very helpful in choosing the right dish, being knowlegeable and also very articulate in english. This was a really nice experience for a date. I saw a lot of good reviews on Unilocal and was looking for a good steak. I went with 1 other person. When we got there, they had just cleared a table so they could fit us in, otherwise you have to wait outside on a bench until there is room in the restaurant, since it’s really small. We ordered una jarra de cleriot(which is just like sangria). This was about 2 and half glasses worth. We got an empanada(spinach and cheese) to share. We also got the chorizo argentino for a starter. I would highly recommend it. Last, we shared the entrée, Paquete llenes, which is bife de chorizo. The steak was really good but it had a lot of fat so we couldn’t eat a lot of it. The papas on the side were good though. On the house, they gave us the lemon tart and a couple chocolate covered strawberries. The desserts were the best part. All in all, it’s good food in a cute environment and the servers are very nice.

Me hubiese gustado darle cinco estrellas, porque la comida es muy buena(la carne es muy buena), y los propietarios son encantadores. Recomiendo el bifé de chorizo y entraña. El problema es que el servicio es lento y no tiene pago con tarjeta de crédito. Mi impresión es que son unos expertos de Unilocal y TripAdvisor y por eso salen en el top, pero tampoco es un restaurante que deba estar entre los mejores del DF.

We went there only because of its rating in Tripadvisor. It’s pretty small and there are just around 10 tables only. We took different types of meat. My wife and my friend’s wife took Filet, and it was very strange! Like soufflé. They apologized and we found out that this meat was frozen, that’s why it was not good. They presented us a few pieces of cake as a compliment. Next morning both people who ate Filet were poisoned and it took them 3 days to recover after that. As I understand we are not the only one who was poisoned there. Be careful.

As American tourists we who speak no spanish, we have had a tough time finding some placed that were as tourist friendly as they were. These people here are AMAZING We were treated like family there, as they took extra time with us personally to show us what they recommend off the menu, and even gave us a free sample of one of their signature dishes, which of course was delicious(a ravioli or tortellini something… can’t remember, but it was good) They even gave us a free dessert to share at the table.(It was a little slower at the time, pre dinner rush, which may be while they were able to walk us through the menu of their personal favorites, complete with a iPad showing HD pics of their best meats off the grill but I get the feeling they would do this regardless) They just were so warm and friendly and welcoming that even if the food wasn’t amazing, it would still stand out because it was just a great evening out! ONTOTHEFOOD– Wow…we all got meat dishes, beef ribs, a filet, and a ribeye I think, this was some of the best cuts of meat I’ve had in a long time. Cooked perfectly, juicy, crispy ends… NOT burnt, as well as the spaghetti or potatoes you can pick as a side dish. A little odd side choices but I went with the spaghetti as they seemed pretty proud of it as well. They were right. A light pesto type spaghetti that was simple, not overpowering with sauce or anything, just amazing flavor. To sum up, atmosphere 5 stars, customers service 5 stars, and most importantly the food… a definite 5 stars! Thank you for taking such good care of a few hungry Americans while in town!

No podía dejar pasar esto. Hace unos años en la feria de las culturas tuve la oportunidad de comer un choripan, jamás los había probado, me encantaron. Después de unos años conocí Gotan, era el famoso lugar en donde por primera vez probé el choripan. Le comentamos a la dueña nuestra experiencia, la cual es un pan de Dios, qué joya de persona. En Gotan restaurante bar encontrarás pastas, ensaladas, empanadas, papas al horno y una variedad de comida que está de lujo. El sabor es único, la pasta a los cuatro quesos ¡uff!, me mató de delicia, la papa a los cuatro quesos no se diga. Un lugar ampliamente recomendable, los dueños son un amor y te ofrecen una atención que en ningún otro lado he tenido, ¡ENNINGUNO! Finalmente no podía dejar pasar la recomendación de los postres, no recuerdo sus nombres pero son un orgasmo total en el paladar. Tienen que ir ¡YA!

No había querido hacer esta reseña pues pensaba que quien la leyera pensará: «a este vato le pagan por reseñar el Gotan», hasta que ayer en una plática me dijeron: «Pos ya, que te importa, si le das 5 estrellas le das 5 estrellas». Y pues aquí estoy, terminándola. Buscando un restaurante que me ofreciera el encanto de una cocina casera argentina –como lo hacía el Quilmes en sus principios– llegué a este lugar, recomendado por la Elite Rosalba y no me defraudó: Vivi y Juan(los dueños) son el alma de este lugar en la Tabacalera, que además es una historia de éxito que comenzó, según ellos mismos, en un local de lámina en los alrededores del monumento a la Revolución antes de la remodelación. Mi recomendación es que te dejes apapachar por Vivi y en una de esas ni veas el menú y dejes que ella te arme tu comida a según respondas sus preguntas(te gusta la carne con grasa? Te gusta el aderezo dulce?, y así. Cierran los domingos(es una larga historia del porqué que seguro te platicará ella) y la cuenta por persona no sobrepasa los 300 pesos. Si te latió el lugar, te recomiendo ampliamente ayudarlos dejándoles un comentario y así ayudar a estos restaurantes de la Tabacalera tan golpeados por el plantón de maestros.

Rustic, real, homey and hidden, Gotan is a true find. This petite Argentine eatery is everything you’d hope for on nights when you’re looking for a casual dinner out and happen to have a hankering for meat treats. We started with the meat empanadas and paired with the homemade sauces, I gobbled mine up rather speedily and particularly liked their chimichurri-like spread. Next up, I ordered off the menu with the choripan. A popular Argentine sandwich, you’ll find sliced chorizo with the chimichurri sauce between the buns of a soft and crunchy baguette. This was absolutely heaven. While I don’t know if it’s always available, you can certainly try your luck. To wash down the fantastic meal, we ordered a bottle of Argentinean Malbec; a solid choice for a solid meal. My dinner dates ate a grilled chicken breast with salad and a steak. A fun fact about Gotan is the owner, Vivi, meticulously washes each vegetable to ensure cleanliness. They also get their veggies shipped in from California and opt for organic varieties. The dessert that followed was a homemade cheesecake like lemon tart and a homemade alfajor. Decadent, perfectly prepared and quickly devoured. As for the service, Vivi is a supreme owner/hostess. The service was attentive and fast and Vivi personally came by to see how we were enjoying our meal. Gotan is the kind of place that makes you feel like family… with a kitchen churning out the kinds of hearty specialties you’d only hope for at your own family gathering.

Un gran secreto dentro de la Colonia Tabacalera. Cocina hecha con el corazón. Hoy es mi primera vez aquí y ya se convirtió en uno de mis lugares preferidos. La selección de comida fue la sugerencia que Vivi(su propietaria) nos hizo … Spaghetti(receta de la Nona), lomito, ensalada, vino tinto, postre(el de la Nona es una cosa deliciosa) y hasta cafecito. Algo que debo resaltar es el punto perfecto de la carne, Juan(propietario), es el encargado de entregarnos los cortes de carne en su punto exacto. El trabajo en la parrilla por lo que sé, no es fácil y casi en todos los sitios en donde ofrecen cortes de carne al carbón no respetan el término exacto de la carne pero a Juan se le da maravillosamente. No tengo palabras que describan con exactitud el buen rato que pasé a lo largo de la tarde, buena comida acompañada de las maravillosas experiencias de vida que Viví compartió con nosotros mientras comimos. Nuestra experiencia ha sido linda y sin duda volveremos muy pronto.

Vivi, en realidad, no es la mesera, sino la anfitriona y co-propietaria del lugar. Argentina ella y argentinísimas sus recetas. Este restaurante comenzó como puesto de lámina blanca, en rumbos más lejanos, fue y es tal su éxito por la calidad en la preparación de cada uno de sus platillos que siguen creciendo. Han sido representantes de la Argentina en la Feria de las Culturas(2012) y también han participado en varias otras muestras gastronómicas. Vivi no sólo se distingue por su sazón sino por ser una excelente anfitriona(no, no me canso de decirlo) y por su sincera calidez. No sé cómo hace para aprenderse tantos nombres de tantos clientes, para administrar el lugar y sus redes sociales. ¡Ella sí es una adorada! Sobre la comida, puedo asegurar que TODAELLA es sabrosa, de buena calidad y muy casera. Los postres, el café, el vino, todo tiene también un distinguido sello de calidad, enmarcado por una bella e hipnotizante decoración(aunque ya va siendo hora de que amplíen, cada vez les queda más chico). Es un lugar discreto. Aquí es fácil disfrutar del placer de comer a pesar del cliché: degustar con calma y masticar con paciencia, probar un poco de todo y regresar siempre. Además, el lugar es céntrico, queda perfecto si uno viene o va del poniente, oriente o norte de la ciudad.

UPDATE: My boyfriend got sick after dining here. The steak was the only thing we both didn’t share the entire trip thus far, so I’m calling it as the cause of his sickness. I’m going to deduct a star, 2.5 for Gotan. My boyfriend and I are on vacation and we decided to give this place a try since it’s rated as the #1 restaurant in Mexico City on TripAdvisor. Our expectation was pretty high and the restaurant didn’t live up to it, in terms of food, so 3.5. A small sit down restaurant famous for their meat. The owner was very nice to us in trying to explain the menu in English accompanied by pictures, however, it took an extremely long time for her to go through the menu — every other second she would stop to pick up the phone, make change for another customer, or give order to another worker. The idea behind it was very nice, but at this point, we weren’t looking to waste time and weren’t so sure if this place deserves the best rated restaurant title. But hey, we’re here for the food, so we’ll rate it based on our dinner. My boyfriend got the Filet Mignon with spinach cream sauce which also came with a side of salad and potatoes on the side, and Lobster Ravioli for me since I don’t eat beef. It took about 5 mins for the food to arrive, sadly my plate was the only thing that came out, we waited another 5 for his salad, and 15 more for his steak. At this point, I had already finished my meal. They also forgot about his potatoes and we had to ask for it. The lobster ravioli in rosa sauce was good, with the right amount of sauce and lobster, but I found it a little too heavy and salty for me. The salad was great! The dressing was light and fresh and loves the dried cranberries for added flavor. The steak, what it’s known for, was meh according to my boyfriend. He said the meat wasn’t what he expected and tasted off… it was tougher than what he’s used to. The meat is from Uruguay so maybe it is different? I wouldn’t know, but the analogy he used was he «ordered a chicken dish, but was served turkey instead.» Since the dessert has been raved about, we went for it anyway. We got a lemon tart and I have to save it was amazing and the best part of the meal! The combination of sweet and sour was perfect and the tart crust was crunchy which provided a contrasting texture to the softness of the tart. Yum! Overall, this place is just ok. The staff was very friendly, but the food didn’t earn it the #1 restaurant in Mexico City title. Oh, cash only(this includes US dollars).

It was raining and this was recommended by somebody at my hotel a block away, so I figured why not. Well, this is now one of my favorite restaurants in the world! Not only is the food delicious, but the price is right too. I landed up pigging out, with 2 empanadas(one on the house), a salad, a steak(perfectly rare, as ordered), amazing French fries, 2 glasses of wine, espresso and 2 desserts(again, one on the house). I’m not a big eater, being a small person, but I couldn’t resist finishing everything. And including tip it was around $ 40 dollars U.S. I can’t wait to go to D. F again soon so I can eat here once more. The owner, Vivianna, is a lovely host, and you cannot go wrong eating here.

Fui a este pequeño restaurante un día que ya tenía bastante hambre y todo estaba cerrado, así que casualmente llegue ahí, con sus mesas largas y toda la ambientación argentina, me enamore. En las paredes puedes encontrar una famosa ilustración de Quino, en donde aparecen varios personajes argentinos como Mafalda, Maradona, Che Guevara, entre otros. Un lugar bastante hogareño y lindo. La comida exquisita, sus empanadas ricas, la carne, sus pastas y sus ensaladas, tienen ese toque mezclado con especias y aceite que hace que quieras más. Lo mejor fue cuando la mesera se nos acerco para ofrecernos un postre cortesía de la casa, ya que esa primera vez ya era tarde y no alcanzamos el menú, nos trajo un postre que cada que voy no puedo evitar comer, es la cosa más rica que he probado, una mezcla de tarta de queso con no sé que., es la especialidad de la casa, y cuenta ella, que es un postre que hacía su abuela, tienes que probarlo.
