El Tinieblo Mezcal Room

It seems the hipster, cocktail bro culture has no borders with the arrival of El Tinieblo.
Sharing a wall and bathroom with a seafood restaurant next door, from a brief conversation with the owner, it seems this is a special project to capitalize on the growing trend of craft cocktail culture in San Diego and beyond. From the looks of things, they’re right in step with some of the basic characteristics of a modern day speakeasy:
— Dark interior
— Minimalist lighting
— Taxidermy
— Lots of brown colored spirits
— Fire!
Elaborating on the latter, smokey drinks resulting from setting pieces of wood on fire and positioning a glass over the charred remains is all the rage (at least in New York). I didn’t expect it from this upstart Tijuana cocktail bar, but what’s a trip to Mexico without some element of danger? Their smokey old fashioned accomplishes what every food or drink related business hopes to achieve: creating something delicious, something unique, and something highly instagrammable. This concoction touches on all three, and it was right up there with some of the best cocktails you can find at the best bars north of the border. It might alone be worth breaking out the passport for.
They have a whole roster of additional drinks with less theatrics, but hey — live a little.

Any place that takes a block of wood, fires it up with a blowtorch, smokes up a glass, makes a mezcal old fashioned and then hands all of this to you like a perfect present is tops in my book. What’s more amazing is that it’s just this nondescript little side bar. «Oh us? Just whhhipping out incredible cocktails in obscurity.»
This is a show you’d rave about in a crazy Manhattan cocktail club and here are these laid back TJ bartenders doing it like it ain’t no thang. Between that, their ahi and snapper tostadas and this incredibly boozy cucumber drink with a trechas rim, I could get in a lot (a LOT) of trouble here.
After a couple of rounds and lots of snacks, our total bill was like $ 20 a person. Because Mexico.

i tasted a cucumber martini (OMG heaven!) & a tamarind martini (love!)
i had an ahi tostada (BEST ahi EVER… for real!). & i believe a snapper tostada (yum!)
i was so full and happy…
can we come back soon? i need to make the time to come south again… even if it’s only for lunch and drinks here

Hit this spot around 6 pm, I think. Bellied up to the bar fist pumps with Luis and on to our first drinks. I had the House Special, mezcal, hibiscus flower and smoked cinnamon, really really good.
Then we hit the ahi tostadas and fresh snapper tostadas. About 6 drinks later I have the chile relleno taco stuffed with camarones. Really really good if I hadn’t already stated that. Friendly bartenders, retro, dark, old world, becoming a bit hipster, mustachio wearing, cocktail and snack stop in TJ must.

This is one of those reviews that I’m hesitant to write. You see, this place falls in my Tijuana top five, (maybe top two), and it doesn’t seem that the cat is out of the bag yet — it’s never crowded, the drinks are excellent and the food is seafood insanity. Selfishly I want it to stay this way, so in the hopes that nobody follows me or reads my reviews, here we go.
The location is off the main drag but still walkable if you’re an amateur day-​tripper. The secret to this place is that it’s connected to a really busy cevicheria, but every menu item that they offer there are offered here. All of the fishes. Skip the line at the front door and enter through the subtle and inconspicuous door on calle 6ta.
Okay, now you’re in the door. Brush up on your Spanglish because you’ll be lucky to carry on a ten second conversation or place an order without knowing a few keywords or delivering some exaggerated hand gestures. In an effort to make things easy on you, here’s all you need to do.
1. Order the «Martinez De Pepino.» It’s a cucumber martini/​margarita type drink with a tamarind seasoned rim that will blow you away. I’ll never order one but I always be stealin’ sips from my friends. Ringing in at 72 pesos (currently $ 4.50 US) this is an expensive drink in Tijuana but a drink that would cost you $ 15.00 in San Diego.
2. Order the «Tostada De Ahi.» Yup, you guessed it, it’s an ahi tostada! It’s been my menu item of choice since day one and I can’t not order it when I’m here. I’ve even brought two of my friends here to give it a shot and the response has been epic. One guy is an absolute sushi snob and the other is an executive chef if that add some validity points. For 42 pesos (currently $ 2.60 US), I could eat five and not bat an eye.
So there you go. I hope you check out Tinieblo when in Tj, but absolutely not when I’m there. I’m selfish, remember?

Buen lugar para después del trabajo! Sobre todo que puedes pedir de la ceviche ría nais y mezclar con una medcalita

Es un bar que me toco frecuentar mucho cuando un amigo se dedicaba a mezclar música, es un muy buen lugar para ir a disfrutar de música electrónica que por lo general, es lo que se ofrece aquí.
El bar tiene una entrada por el restaurant La Corriente Cevicheria, así que si te ha tocado ir al restaurant probablemente hayas visto el bar y viceversa ya que en la noche cuando el restaurant está cerrado, se usan los baños de ahí.
El bar en si es muy chiquito en tamaño y me toco varias veces que se pusiera bastante caliente porque no cuenta con mucha circulación de aire, pero no dejes que eso te incomode, pídete una cerveza fría o unas mezcalitas que te ofrecen. Créeme con unas dos de esas ya se te olvido el calor. Aparte la música, en la mayoría de sus veces está muy buena para estarse preocupando por el calor.

I was never a huge mezcal fan, but my friends seem to enjoy it. This is a wee little bar, that for the most part sells mezcal, it’s a nice change from the mezcalera.
Pay close attention to the pictures above, because it’s very easy to walk right past this place. Once you find it, give it a chance! It might look slightly… small and sketch on the outside but just trust me on this one. Once you walk inside, you’ll be in a 90’s velvet paradise mixed with vintage décor (when you walk in you’ll know what I’m talking about) And another thing that I notices is that it’s so dark in here, which I guess explains the name (tinieblo means darkness)
I have to admit, I’m a sucker for sweet drinks and food. Ergo, my favorite shot is the coconut one (coco) But they also have tons of citrus and fresh flavors.
Worth coming here to check out this speakeasy inspired bar, it’s a nice change from the mezcalera.

Un lugar pequeñito, vintage y original para unos tragos ricos que hace que empiece la noche de buena manera. Tinieblo se encuentra a un lado de la Corriente Cevichería Naís en el centro, y es ahí donde sirven los mejores tragos con mezcal que puedas probar.
Mi favorito es el de limón pues es muy refrescante sobre todo cuando es verano, creo que es un trago que te calma el calor y te regresa a la vida. Otros como tamarindo o coco son unos clásicos. La música en el tinieblo es electrónica por lo que muchos lo consideran un lugar muy «cool» para empezar la noche.
Eso sí por el pequeño espacio muy probablemente te quedes sin asiento, así que ten en cuenta que tendrás que consumir en la barra o de pie, aún así es un buen lugar en donde empezar la fiesta en el centro.

Un día estaba caminando por la sexta rumbo a otro bar que se encuentra por la zona y por casualidad me topé con El Tinieblo.
A primera impresión me dio un poco de desconfianza entrar ya que la puerta estaba cerrada y prácticamente no se veía nada al interior. Mi novio insistió en entrar a conocerlo así que a final de cuentas entramos, y que bueno que así fue ya que el lugar me sorprendió.
El Tinieblo cuenta con una decoración vintage, con sillas de terciopelo y lámparas antiguas. Además, el lugar hace honor a su nombre y está muy oscuro, únicamente iluminado con las lámparas vintage que tienen de centro de mesa.
Como su nombre lo indica, la especialidad en este lugar son los tragos hechos con mezcal. En esa ocasión yo pedí la mezcalita de coco y me encantó!!
Este lugar conecta con el restaurante la Corriente Cevichería Nais, por lo que puedes ir a cenar al restaurante y posteriormente ir al bar a tomar un trago.

Ah, bueno. Cuando escuchas de una cevichería con un bar llamado «El tinieblo», sabes que algo anda mal con las personas, y sin embargo le da autenticidad y morbo. Sólo dos ventanillas dejan ver desde afuera que adentro hay actividad y que la pasan bien, y eso basta para animarte a entrar.
Mezcal, bebida tan anclada a nuestra cultura y que atraviesa fronteras de clase en un cerrar de ojos. En El tinieblo encuentras este alcohol en un ambiente de antro. Músicos invitados en los fines de semana; DJ’s que ambientan con trance y circuit o pop electrónico. Sin precios estratosféricos y una iluminación más que escasa, opaca, el entorno se presta para una fiesta tranquila.
No me encanta. Aún cuando su mezcal natural es muy bueno, hay algo en el ambiente que no va conmigo. Está muy cerrado. Y no soy. claustrofóbico, pero llega a calentarse el aire y es muy húmedo, además. Fuera de esto, es un concepto bastante particular que fusiona el misterio (se llama Tinieblo, por Dios) y la onda elegante del espacio en una buena amalgama. Vale la pena conocerlo.

Al escuchar su nombre me imagino un lugar oscuro, misterioso y masomenos es eso. Por fuera no te puedes dar cuenta de nada de lo que esta pasando adentro.
La primera vez que fui no tenia ni idea de cómo era el lugar. Fuimos porque habíamos escuchado de el y porque es el bar de La Corriente Cevicheria Nais. Entramos a un lugar con poca iluminación pero con muy buena vibra.
El lugar esta conectado a la cevicheria así que si estas comiendo le puedes seguir al bar o viceversa.
En la barra hay un espejo en toda la pared y la cabeza de un venado en color blanco (símbolo del Tinieblo). Tienen muebles antiguos que hacen la decoración perfecta.
La música que tocan es electrónica y siempre tienen buenos Djs. Tienen un ambiente relajado, sin duda un lugar que tienes que conocer.

Es un bar único en su estilo. Cuando lo vi por fuera pues se ve como extraño o no con muchas ganas de llegar la verdad pero cuando vi el letrero que era by cevichera nais, no dude en llegar por que sé que es una empresa muy bien organizada, con un gran servicio y con buena calidad.
Al entrar al lugar me encanto, tiene una decoración muy particular tiene las vistas doradas y las paredes negras con algunas líneas blancas se ve muy elegante, pero no lo es, es muy informal y los muebles tienes un concepto como de los años 20´s o 30´s, la verdad me encanto, además tiene una conexión con el restaurante, así es que si esta comiendo y quieres unos traguitos está a unos cuantos pasos.
La carta fuerte de bebidas es el mezcal, no soy fanático del mezcal pero el concepto del lugar me gusto y aparte tiene muy buena música entre electrónica y Louge. Muy recomendable.

¿Quién dijo que en los antros nice no se sirve mezcal?
Y es que uno de los sitios a los que me he hecho asidua desde hace algunos meses, es este: El Tinieblo Mezcal Room, me he puesto uno de mis mejores «gallitos» (borrachera) en este lugar donde literalmente me sacaron cargando porque nunca había provado el mezcal y me pegó bien fuerte, no es broma cuando te dicen que debes de irte con cuidado pues el mezcal es terreno peligroso, aunque admito que también fue mi error en excederme con las copas, upsi.
En mi segunda vuelta en El Tinieblo Mezcal Room, me di a la tarea de probar una de sus especialidades mientras escuchaba DJ Chucuchu y Le Rodriguez que estaba como invitado, es uno de los lugares que los hipstersillos adoramos por excelencia y donde por regla te debes poner una guarapeta con el mero elixir de nuestros antepasados, siempre y cuando vayas con amigos y te dejes llevar por la música electronica que tocan, los eventos son geniales y los artistas que traen jamás los verás en algún otro lugar, o al menos El Tinieblo Mezcal Room se encarga de ser los primeros en tenerlos.
Recomiendo cien por ciento este lugar, pero ve preparado con suficiente dinero pues no es tan económico como otros lugares de la zona. Auch.
