Bema is famous in Devonport, and for good reason. For a country so closely linked with fish and chips, I find it quite hard to find good ones. They’re either too greasy, soggy, salty, small, too battery — I could go on. But here at Bema, they know what they’re doing. I’ve been getting fish and chips here for about 10 years now and i’ve never had a bad experience. The fish is thick and delicious, the batter isn’t too much and the chips are perfectly done. It’s also really good value for money. All the extras like burgers, hot dogs and deep fried scallops are really good too. If the food isn’t enough, the service is lovely. The young guy seems to know all the locals by name and even what they want to order. Chill and wait for your order while reading a magazine and then take the fish and chips down to road to one of Devonport’s numerous beautiful beaches. Better still, take it up North Head and enjoy it on top of Auckland City.
