Hard to Find Secondhand Bookshop

So I am no bibliophile (bookworm) but I love words. I went here to buy my book loving mother a couple of books. What you are greeted with is an overwhelming collection of books. When I say overwhelming my mother was literally flush in the cheeks after 30mins of looking around & needed some fresh air after an hour.
I would say they cater to everyone’s tastes, but some people are into some freaky deeky stuff.
If you can’t find something… There is a high chance you won’t. Because there are TOOOOOOO many books! But thankfully they have staff that is equally in love with books & seem to love working there. So they will have an idea of where to find whatever it is that your heart desires.
Last thing I will say is that if you or in the case of my mum are too overwhelmed, they have a website that actually works. They also have vouchers that come in twenty dollar denominations. So yeah if you want book, come here!

Hard to find bookstore is my favourite second hand bookstore in Auckland. It is amazing and a great place to spend an hour or two. Inside an old converted house you can get lost in the rooms which are filled with books from the ceiling to floor. Even though the shop is filled to the brim with wonderful books of every genre the place is relatively well organised and if you’re hunting for something in particular then it’s usually easy to find. As I said it’s easy to lose track of time and spend a few hours here and leave with an armful of books.

This is an AWESOME book store, particularly if your tad quirky like myself and like the– you get it — hard-​to-​find-​books! Particularly on books about spirituality, theology, science, mysticism and/​or philosophy. The guy behind the counter knows his stuff too, was helpful and friendly upon my last visit, thanks muchly!
Am looking forward to going back here again soon and allowing a few hours to have another look and shopping spree!

You will probably find every book you’ve ever wanted here. It’s massive. It’s packed. It’s cheap. It’s a great place to build up your collections. Get all your Vic Lit here (but make sure you put Jane Austen back on the shelf coz she sucks. Yeah, I said it). Get all your True Crime here. Get John Grisham and Steven King galore. The books vary in quality, which is what I like about second hand book stores. I don’t want new-​looking books. I want it to look like I’ve owned that shit for years! Honestly, just go there and spend an afternoon. You can hang out there. There’s two floors of beautiful, smelly old books with chairs to sit on and other people to talk to. It’s glorious. Go on, go.

I’d been past hard to find many times, but never had an excuse to actually go in, untill last year I needed a book for uni and refused to pay for it at USB. I hopped online and found out hard to find had it, so rang up and asked them to put it aside. I headed there planning to just run in and grab it, but when I walked in the door all such thoughts vanished from my mind. Hard to Find is like that elusive 2^nd hand bookstore movies glamorize, with two floors packed wall to wall with books. They have books for everything here — from Lawn Bowls to Xylophone buggery. The staff are all friendly and willing to help find whatever you are looking for, and they have a massive store house from which they can usually find any book you want, if it is not on the shelves.
One could almost say a store like this is «Hard to Find.» (sorry)

What do you buy for the person who has everything? Something fun, interesting or ridiculous; something they’ve never seen before. Hard To Find Bookstore is the place to go for the person who has everything — spend enough time in amongst the weird little nooks and crannies and you’re bound to find something for that awkward person who requires a gift.
Ohe of my most lovely memories of Hard To Find Bookstore was a Christmas morning, when the small family of academics I was sharing breakfast with handed out presents. All three of them had bought each other gifts from Hard To Find, and all were so appreciative of their gifts. Some of the books still had their HTF price tags pencilled inside but nobody cared — gift-​giving isn’t always about how much it costs, but how much it means. And to these bookworms, the gifts were priceless.

Hard to Find is worth a trip to Onehunga in itself.
It’s a modest-​looking little shop from the outside, but inside it’s labyrinthine. To me it’s the best of second hand book shops as they should be; it’s absolutely crammed full from ceiling to floor, in shelves and in stacks, it rambles over two stories and covers almost every genre you can think of, yet it’s well organised into subject areas and the alphebetising is top notch. Yesss.
I go here for my favourite authors that are tricky to find either new or secondhand, and usually have luck. Last time I went I had several Shusaku Endo books to deliberate over, which was a real treat.
Happily, I’ve never had to battle horrible jangly music while browsing, and the staff are lovely. Also they have a loyalty card.

This is Auckland’s best (and probably biggest) second hand bookstore. It’s musty in a good «old books» kind of way, and sprawling and welcoming at the same time.
Set over two floors of one of Onehunga’s old buildings, it’s like a house full of books. Most rooms have a comfy old chair or two for reading, and visitors are encouraged to sit and do just that. The subject range is huge and varied, and the prices are of course, excellent.
The staff are knowledgeable and will point you in the right direction if you are after something in particular. Which is helpful because if you haven’t been here before you could get lost and never come back out.
Sadly Onehunga has been on the decline in the last few years despite there being a number of really great businesses here. I would recommend coming for lunch at Luscious, followed by a fossick at the Hard to Find and then checking out Look Sharp Discount Store. This historic Auckland suburb has suffered from mismanagement for too long now but as while these unique places cling on, it’s still worth a visit — there is so much character and potential.
