This is my favorite bubble tea shop in Auckland. The prices seem high at first, but the drinks come in giant beer mugs, and I find the slushy drinks almost too generously-portioned to finish. Each table has a button you use to call the server, which makes ordering very easy. The menu is extensive, and drinks are very customizable. The late hours(12 a.m. or 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday) and relaxed vibe make this a great after-dinner hangout spot. When I was a student, a group of friends and I would come and sit at one of the bigger tables and play card games for a while if there weren’t people waiting for seats. I didn’t often order food, but when I did I remember it being good, but a bit pricey for the portions, though this may have changed in the past several years. The cute cat theme is also a plus if that’s your thing!

To be honest, I have always been rather dubious of these concoctions they call ‘bubble tea’. I think it has usually been the floaty accompaniments in the drink that have put me off trying it till today. I mean who wants floaty balls in a drink?! Well apparently I do cause the drink I tried here was so good, seriously. I had one of the yoghurt milk varieties, of the lime flavour if I can remember correctly and when asked if I wanted toppings on it, I agreed to the pearls willingly! I don’t know what was wrong with me, I guess I went with the«try something new every day» thing, and Im glad I did. I now have super good feelings in my mouth and I want them to continue so I may go back tomorrow.

You want good bubble tea? Look no further than Hulu Cat. They are the kings. Don’t go anywhere else coz like srsly. No one else is worth it. There are two that I am aware of in the CBD, one opposite near the Civic Theatre and the other, all the way down Symonds St. If you can be bothered, I recommend going to the Symonds St one(the original). It’s a pretty funny place to be in, all white with soft toy cats everywhere. The reason why I like their tea is the flavour; just tastes better(no bitterness), their pearls are the right texture and they have to option for varying the degrees of sweetness(don’t do 100% it’s too much. Trust me). They sell food here too which is actually not that bad and they open late. wooo

My friends have this Hulu club, where they go to Hulucat late at night and get bubble tea. I’ve never really been a big fan of bubble tea. There’s just too much milk. But I’ve tried normal tea at Hulucat and it’s been good, and I’ve also sampled the food. Hulucat is awesome because it’s open late and you can get chocolate waffles and fried chicken and chips with cheese and all sorts of crazy snacks. There are buzzers at your table so you can call your waiter over, and there are pop music videos on tv’s around the joint for entertainment. It can get really packed out and it’s kind of tacky, but that’s why people love Hulucat. I recommend going and having one of the giant slushies. They are huge and full of sugar so you will be on a buzz for a good hour following.

I must say this little Tea house located on Anzac Ave in the city is a cute little find. I was introduced to the café by a Malaysian friend who recommend I try a bubble tea drink and the chocolate Belgium waffles, how unique? Walked in after work one day, and the place was packed to the brim, a really busy time of night maybe is 6−8pm, so we ordered a drink each instead of having a meal in. I ordered Mango Milk Tea iced with bubbles. You may be thinking what is a Bubble tea? Well this tea drink originated in Taiwan, and consists of flavoured milk tea or fruit tea and small tapioca chewy like balls that are called pearls. Was all a bit of a cultural experience for me, which I enjoyed a lot. The inside décor of the cute café is bright and cat themed which is a neat little quirk too. If your after a catch up with a friend, and you want a slightly different themed venue, here’s your chance.
