Musick Point for me is one of Auckland’s far flung secrets. Ok maybe it’s just far flung for me. Anyway, it’s a beautiful green reserve set on the headland at Bucklands Beach. The views are of course stunning, but for me what makes this place special is the Musick Memorial Radio Station building. It is classic Art Deco(even if the Radio Group who look after it call it Modern; semantics, it’s both) and sits facing loftily out to sea. In my amateur opinion I reckon it’s a particularly good example of the style due to its referencing of an aeroplane — the Art Deco movement was all about embracing the new industrial age, particularly those newfangled machines that were allowing people to travel more easily than they ever had before. I am going to get myself inside one of these days and have a proper explore of the old original radio station. Come for a wander and research this pretty spot’s interesting history for yourself.

It’s a nice place to visit, in a nice area. Whether you’ve just been enjoying Eastern Beach or Bucklands Beach and want to keep exploring, or you fancy taking your ladyfriend/new beau on a romantic sunset date, Musick Point literally sets the scene. At low tide you can walk round the beach and over rocky platforms from Eastern Beach, or take the road up from Clovelly Road. Once you’re up there you’ll spot the old Musick Memorial Radio Station building which will mostly only interest history buffs but is still pretty cool all the same. Otherwise enjoy a bush clad stroll to seek out views acrossto Rangitoto and other Hauraki Gulf wonders, or tumble down the staircase to sea level. Really it’s just a nice place to wander round; bring your kids, bring your dog, bring your soul.

Musick Point is an interesting spot to visit. You can drive up(or walk up if you’re some kind of masochist) past people sedately playing golf, hoping a ball won’t fly through your window, and then hop out and wonder what they use the big old building at the top of the hill for. I always think it would be a really lovely place for an outdoor wedding actually, not sure why — there’s something nice about the rows of trees lining the lawns, and the dappled light underneath. Also there’s a handy cliff edge in case you want to bump off any pesky in-laws on the big day. Bring a dog or a child and find the path that winds down to the beach below– there is some top-notch exploring to be done, including caves. Yes, proper caves! And nice sneaky holes in the rocks to crawl through, and jutty out bits for fishing off, and general scrambly rocks. Lovely.

No, there aren’t any mermaids sitting on rocks playing harps, nor is this where bands perform live(though it may be a breath taking spot for a music video during dusk or dawn). No magical elements, but simply a lovely spot to look out onto the ocean and take in the spectacular cliff faces. You can drive right up to the tip where there’s this large white building where they run a radio station(there you are, music!) and a great view past the large trees. There are some good picnic spots and large grassy areas to walk your dog on a summer’s day. Musick Point doesn’t have much else but nature and you, so make the most of it. Make it truly musical with an epic soundtrack on your iPod as you take a breather from life’s worries.
