Came here starving, and the place was slammed. Ordered the Jerk Chicken burger and received a grilled chicken burger with zero jerk sauce or any flavor. It was chicken on a bun with mayo, lettuce and vague mango chutney hidden somewhere. Asked if the jerk sauce was ‘overlooked’, was told curtly«I don’t know it’s supposed to be jerk». Was offered refund but thought I’d try again at something else. Asked for the steak sandwich, got literal garbage on a plate. Inedible. So $ 21 for an attempt at two of the shittiest meals I’ve seen in eons. Cool.

Came here after work for a client meeting and a nibble on a Monday evening. The service was OK, a lot of the staff were standing talking to each other as it wasn’t that busy — I get it but it just doesn’t look professional. The food was expensive for what you got — I felt. The décor is great and I imagine would be a good spot for drinks with friends but I wouldn’t eat here again(the food itself was tasty, just not worth the price, event for downtown Auckland).

A great spot for an after work drink in the city. We also visited to have their Auckland Restaurant Month menu in 2014 and it was great!

We popped into Northern a Steamship because I had a voucher for a free platter from the Macs bar loyalty program. The bar was busy and full and the staff were attentive and served us quickly. Had no idea what the free platter would be like but was pleasantly surprised. Delicious platter of salt and pepper squid, kumera fries, chicken nibbles and prawn twists. Was delicious, crispy and totally impressive considering it was free and I get a voucher texted to me nearly every week. If you’re a regular make sure you sign up for the loyalty program.

This is a great location and it’s a Mac’s bar! Doesn’t get much better than that. I would frequent this place a lot of I lived locally. Funky and«out there» décor that keeps you looking around. Nice old Victorian building with a retro fit out. It’s cosy, quiet and big! All the things you want in a bar. Great place for catch up’s with mates away from all the«doof doof» bars. It follows the similar suit of all Mac’s bars but I would have to say this one is my favourite. Reasonable pricing on drinks and staff that are readily available is a big selling point!

I stopped in here after an interview at the University as I was desperate need of a patio and a pint. The woman working was super lovely, and was totally kind helping me find something that I wanted. We chatted for a bit before I settled in on the patio. It’s not the absolute best location in terms of all the patio. You are right on the street, but you can see the port and it’s a good place to sit. It’s relatively quiet. They serve Macs beer which I came to enjoy a lot of when I was in NZ. The ambience is great, I’d totally go and have a meal there inside if I was in Auckland again. It’s a close walk to everything, but it’s not right on Queen so it’s a bit quieter. I recon if I lived in Auckland it might become one of my regular haunts.

Another of the Mac’s Brew Bars, this potentially has the best location of them all. With it’s ambiguous interior theme, Northern Steamship always seems to draw a decent crowd, particularly on Friday and Saturday night. All it is lacking is a decent outdoor area, with the ‘in-and-out’ system becoming particularly confusing for the bouncers on a Saturday. The bar has the usual solid selection of Mac’s beers on tap, with a great layout indoor, good for both large and small groups, there is an ample amount of seating. We have visited on a Saturday afternoon for a beer before and have a nice, quiet experience in the sun. It seems like it would be a good winter bar, with its predominantly wood-finished interior.

I really want to say nice things about this place, I really do. I’ve been here before and had a good time and generally find it a pretty chilled out bar to have a drink at with friends. But unfortunately I had a pretty bad experience with them last night. It was my hens night so, as per usual, I went out with a group of girlfriends. We arrived at the Northern Steamship only to be told we weren’t allowed in. Why? A no hens night policy. I think this is completely ridiculous. We had a pretty sensible group with us, no one was drunk or disorderly and we weren’t dressed in any trashy costumes. So if it hadn’t been for the veil I was wearing on my head we would be no different from many other groups of girls out that night. I think this is ridiculous and very unfair. Every group should be judged based on the same rules, so if we met the dress code, we weren’t drunk and we were behaving appropriately we should have been allowed in. Full stop.

This is the type of place I love, the type of place where one drink turns into a night out. The quirky interior doesn’t distract from a place in which one can relax on an afternoon but later on into the evening, particularly on weekends, the tempo and energy can rise significantly. It’s a Mac’s Brew Bar so you can probably guess the range of beers they have on offer. Not that it’s a bad thing, and the pitchers are pretty good value, in Britomart at least. This place goes to show you don’t have to stray too far from Queen Street for a top quality drinking hole.

Northern Steamship is a funky pub located in Britomart, in the middle of Auckland’s CBD. With a great selection of Mac beer on tap, wines and spirits this is a great bar to come hang and have after work drinks with the gang. They have a wickedly great atmosphere, vintage lamp shades hanging from the ceiling, and artistic features up the wall. The food is quite pub like, but still incredibly enjoyable. Not only is it a perfect bar for after work drinks, but it’s so well located in the CBD I quite enjoying going there for a drink before a concert at the Vector. Northern Steamship is a great bar to pop into and have a casual meal and drink within the city of sails.

The Britomart precinct is big on its heritage protection, and Northern Steamship is perhaps the best example of restoring and reusing an old building. It’s a wonderfully large, spacious room with a high ceiling, fantastic light fixtures, brick walls and timber floors. It’s a fantastic spot to grab a drink, especially on a winter’s evening when the fire is roaring. They’ve got the full range of Macs beer and cider on tap, and a great range of cocktails. Foodwise, it’s all gastropub fare, and the desserts are a real treat! Enjoy in one of the big leather chairs and spend the evening.

I choose Northern Steamship Co. because it’s just a short walk to Vector Arena, making it a great place to meet before a show. It’s also a handy meet-up point for after-work drinks or dinner before a night on the town. The bar is named after the original occupants of the building, and much care has been taken to ensure this heritage building lives up to its long history. Relax in one of the big comfy chairs or meet friends at one of the larger tables, and make sure you look up — the collection of vintage lamps that adorn the roof will make mid-century collectors(like me) seethe with jealousy. A range of Mac’s beers are available on tap, and this wino enjoys sampling the Roaring Meg Riesling and Dog Point Sav. The food is pretty traditional pub fare, with the most popular dishes straight out of the deep fryer. For the conscious eater, try the«Wellbeing» platter — smoked salmon, olives, chicken wraps and fresh chutneys abound!
