The Takapuna Fish Shop is my go-to fishmonger — there’s not many on the shore but I’ve always found the fish fresh and the price right. However, after my takeaways tonight, i’m not as sold on their fish and chips. Sure they’re cheap and it’s conveniently located 5mins walk from a beach but I found their fish to be dry(overcooked?) and the batter stodgy. On the plus side the chips where well salted and crunchy, and the owner is always so lovely — very chippa, with a smile on his dial. Whilst T.F.S will continue to be my fishmonger of choice, with sooo many fish and chips shops to try, I think i’ll go elsewhere to indulge in this kiwi classic in the future.

The fact that fish & chips is considered to be one of New Zealand culturally prominent meals is actually slightly embarrassing. The cheapest, most fat ridden, no nutritional value meal that actually takes no skill to prepare. But all of that aside, if you know a place who does a good job of it and there is beach nearby to eat at, it is kind of a awesome thing to eat. I recommend Takapuna Fish Shop. The chips are nice, the fish taste fresh, and the food doesn’t ever taste like it has been cooked in old oil like the food from some fish and chip shops can. With a beach close by, you have everything you could possibly want or need, ever.

There’s nothing much more enjoyable than great fish ‘n’ chips on the beach, but it’s not the easiest to make that a reality, as a lot of takeaways places just don’t seem that fantastic. Had been planning to get to this place for ages with my girlfriend, and we finally got our act together and made our way down for a naughty unhealthy dinner and find a nice spot to enjoy it. I have to say I don’t think I’ve had a better fish ‘n’ chips experience outside an actual restaurant than we did here. The fish was fresh, and the batter not stodgy and heavy, nice and light, and the healthy dose of chips made for a pant-stretchingly good meal. Definitely glad we decided to try it, and will be back again for sure.

For something that’s supposed to be so ‘Kiwi’(fish and chips) I actually don’t know many good fish shops. Which actually makes it lucky that I know this little gem. This is definitely my go-to when getting good old fish and chips, or some fish for dinner. Walk in and you already feel like you made the right choice. The place is spotless. The use of white and blue and the shining surfaces emphasize the freshness of this place even more. There are beautiful cuts of fish, mussels, scallops and oysters. The staff are lovely and will help you out with anything you need. The fish and chips are really yummy, and not too greasy like many others. I recommend pre-ordering if its a hot summer evening, as I’m not the only fan.
