This is such a cool store, one of the go to options for when I have to buy gifts because everything there is unique. Even though it is New Zealand designed and made, there is not too much kiwiana, that makes for good gifts for tourists or people you know who are overseas but much of the store is just products created by amazingly talented people of whom Texan Art Schools bring collectively into their store. You’ll find textiles, glass, ceramics, jewelry and prints here as well as what I think must be feijoa candles because the store smells of feijoas.
A while back I purchased some amazing glass vases and a dish for myself and had wanted to go back and get another colour of one of the vases. It was gone. So lesson here is that you need to just buy it at the time. Stock is often limited.

Stuck for a present idea? Stop stressing right now and go to Texan Art Schools. Don’t be put off by the name, the only thing you’ll be doing is buying something awesome. Texan Art Schools is full of all that kind of stuff you see at other people’s house and tell yourself ‘I must remember to get one of those.’ It’s the ultimate gift place because the stuff here isn’t completely practical, it’s about wants rather than needs, and that is the best sort of present.
There is a lot of Kiwiana in the form of teatowels, toys, clocks, jewelry, coasters and much much more. But there are also quirky books, and plenty of boring household items made funky.
Even if you don’t end up buying anything, it’s very inspirational and you’ll find things you never knew even existed.
The staff are great and are genuinely excited about their store. They’re getting new stuff in all the time so there’s always something fresh.
Cool place, unique stuff.

This is my go-​to shop if I want a nice gift with a Kiwiana theme. Far from the tacky souvenir shops you find on Queen St, the items you’ll find in Texan Art Schools are actually things you’d want to have in your own home.
Most recently I purchased a really kitsch set of babushka-​style dolls but in the form of a Maori woman in traditional costume. I needed a gift that was light (was being posted to the UK) and fun, for someone in their 20s, but also cool enough that they’d want to have the gift on display in the UK. I think I came up trumps!

I’ve only recently discovered the Texan Art School. To be honest, up until a few months ago, I thought it was actually a school of art. Well I was wrong; it’s instead a very cool gift store. They stock loads of funky ceramics and prints, jewellery and bits and bobs for your home. A lot of their range has a kiwiana theme, but thankfully with out being the tacky souvenir kind. The prints in particular are easy to send overseas, and have gone done very well with family living abroad. I’ve also bought a few engagement presents at Texan Art School; I like the fact they are cute individual items that you don’t see everywhere. They have a few stores around Auckland and have just opened at Sylvia Park too

Is this an Art School? I’m not sure. What I know it has is a great New Zealand gift and NZ made souvenir shop. If you want good quality New Zealand gifts then this is the place to come.
They do loads of stuff, including Jewellery, paintings, signs, korus, ceramics, wood carvings, sculptures, you name it. Many of the items they sell are also one offs so very unique bits which are wonderful for special gifts whether it be for someone living in NZ or family and friends overseas. Also while some things are expensive, I think they have something for everyone’s budget.
I have been to the Newmarket and Ponsonby stores and have found staff at both to be very helpful with advice for gifts.
