This place is amazing, went for a group dinner as friends who were regulars when they lived in Onehunga had a wicked craving for their pasta and after tonight I can see why. I ordered the butter n sage ravioli, oversized filled pasta with a rich sauce and lashings of parmesan cheese. Yum. and as a smaller serving size than what others ordered, just perfect. My mates ordered the seafood pasta, and it looked delish, so good I wasn’t even allowed a taste! The restaurant is small, welcoming and BYO at a very reasonable $ 2per person loved the red colander light fittings! On my list of fave places to eat out in Auckland.

I wanted to use my date night dinner outing to be something Italian, and somewhere I would be totally impressed with. After much consideration and many options to choose from as you know Auckland is bustling with places, and Italian at that to dine at. My decision was cemented by my husband saying«what about that intimate little one we have driven past a zillion times». So Me Né Frego it was, as it appeared quite small, I decided to ring in the day before and book in a reservation, so we could have our date confirmed. I was greeted on the phone by a foreign man, and he said that certainly 7:30 was fine, when I rang back a few minutes later to book in for 7pm, this was also fine and no problem at all. We arrived a few minutes late for our reservation, and arrived to a very busy spot, with all the tables except for ours full. Perfect, this added to the mystery and the excitement. The Red light bulbs gave a romantic and relaxed feel to the setting. The tables were all quite close to each other, but you still had space to enjoy and be relaxed. I could see into the kitchen where the head chef stood cooking away with his kitchen help. The menu was handwritten, and had even some cute hand drawn pictures, which might have been perhaps from the owners children. The Italian names, had the contents listed next to them, so that you had a good indication of what you ordered. I was keen to have my starters, so we ordered two types of brushetta, an original and a seafood one. Both were full of flavour and very tasty. They came out served on wooden boards. To compliment our meal we picked a bottle of red wine(might have been Argentinian), picked by our elderly charming Italian waitress. For mains, I could not resist ordering the Marinara seafood pasta, came steaming and full of aroma, served on a large fish platter. Believe it or not I left my plate empty. Al dente pasta, amazing flavour and sauce throughout the pasta and ofcourse the star of it, the seafood mix. I kiss my fingers! My husband, ordered the sage and butter tortellini, which was not on the menu, however after a good chat with our waitress she decided he would really enjoy this. Great to have a restaurant that caters for your taste buds wherever they may lead. As the restaurant dinner rush slowly emptied out, we sat alongside one other table enjoying the ambiance, and decided on Pear Helena for dessert, simply Pear, Ice Cream, and chocolate sauce. A really enjoyable night, I am sure to recommend Me Né Frego to one and all, and be back to try more delicious treats.
