Very touristic and too expensive. We are talking more than 5 Euros for a small beer. The food is only okay but nothing special. There is however a nice amount of people and a good atmosphere but in my opinion there are better places to go in this neighborhood.

Great spot to grab a couple of drinks and/or some brews in the heart of downtown Amsterdam. This place was actually an extremely friendly environment and has a welcoming outdoor seating area which is ideal for people watching etc… Came here and grubbed on a burger w/fries and washed it down with a couple of local brews which were all pretty dang good. Overall, this is a pretty good kickback spot. Pros– Location Outdoor seating Burgers Brews Service Friendly Decent price Cons– Smokey at times

Three stars mostly for being convenient and having a lot of outdoor seating. The breakfast was pretty mediocre — it was definitely eatable but the bacon is on the raw side; any time a table of six or seven Americans leaves piles of bacon on the plates you’re doing something horribly wrong. Oh, and if you’re looking for some water for that hangover it’s seven euro. In conclusion it’s very middling yet a bit pricey — a better bar than a place to recover from a night out at one.

Note: reviewing the breakfast. This place leaves a lot to be desired. To be fair — you’re in the touristy area a short walk from Centraal and you have to expect inflated prices, but the breakfast we had was just not that good. Six of us met before a boat ride and maybe one person actually finished their meal. My friend and I had the full breakfast and the bacon was greasy and soggy, the sausage looked like Jimmy Dean frozen links, and the eggs were bland(at least put S+P on the table if you aren’t going to season them). Seriously — if no one at a table that big wants your bacon, it’s not good. Others had the omelette, some sort of breakfast sandwich, etc. We were hungover and hungry, so we ate, but € 9-€ 14/plate for what we got was not good. Two friends ordered beer to wash it down. At least it got us going again.

Wow. Some of these reviews make me doubt my powers of observation because, while I knew we were close to the action, I didn’t see any evidence of it! Dropped by the Grasshopper — in an extremely busy part of Amsterdam on the doorstep of The Red Light District — while trying to find a halfway quiet respite from all the other tourists. Explained this to the charming hostess and she led us up two flights of stairs to a quiet dining room which my husband and I had all to ourselves. We could actually talk to each other in normal voices! My burger and his steak were excellent and the Heineken was the perfect temperature. We would stop here again, for sure, except that one visit to this part of Amsterdam is about ¾’s of a visit too much. Tip: Yes, it’s generous to tip the restroom hostess — she’s the one who makes the bathroom a clean place to go(pun intended). Having a restroom caretaker is not uncommon practice in many areas of Europe.

We stopped here for a nice lunch. The waitress was awesome, my burger was delicious, y friend said her Calamari was not that impressive. It’s on the waterfront with a nice view, too bad there is so much construction. The place wasn’t bad just pricey for lunch.

When we arrived at The Grasshopper, we were unhappy to discover that the café(the basement) was not in operation. However, the first floor bar and the second floor steakhouse were still open and we saw tons of tourists entering looking for the café and leaving. Bummer.

Where do I start with this place, the year was 1999, I’m the only yank in the group stuck with four soon to be doctors from England that are really into lighting up hints that’s why we were in Amsterdam. After several rounds of partaking I order several Heinekens to balance me out. This was the first coffee shop I have ever been to and I can say the weirdest damn place I have ever been in in my twenty plus years. The artwork on the wall is a cross between some Spanish naked chick riding a muscular giant grass hopper looking to kick some ass! Pretty crazy when you just got off the god damn boat I tell ya and partaking with some crazed British pot heads that do not know how to pace themselves. But when it was time to drain the lizard I couldn’t figure out why women and men were going in the same bathroom, finally someone clued me in its unisex you moron. But all in all I will never forget this crazy place as long as I live good or bad crazy or weird. Thanks Grasshopper for the memories and good times !!!

We had the steak, an Argentine beef steak. It was ok, certainly not the best but is was filling. A bit pricy, not the same Grasshopper as it once was. No marijuana inside any longer. Lots of drunk tourist sitting out front at tables, high, drunk, sloppy. Go upstairs to eat and avoid the stoned, drunk, idiots.

This place had the weirdest bathroom ever the toilet flushed all over me when I sat down on it and there was a female bathroom attendant in the men’s room when I went there about ten years ago. Then a crazed homeless person attacked me outside saying give me your money give me your money!!! Really got me off to a weird trip. Glad Unilocal exists now, I never forgot how the grasshopper did me dirty. here you go Grasshopper your weed did not even dull my horrible memory of my experience there over a decade ago in the slightest.

This pub/coffee shop technically isn’t inside the red light district, but it does skirt the edge so it gets a fair amount of pedestrian traffic. I suppose it’s a good place for people watching, both inside and out. It consists of three very large floors and outdoor seating out front. On the night we visited things seemed to be hopping on the inside(that’s a grasshopper pun). Locals were chatting with bartenders and everybody seemed to be downing beers. We got some beers too. Personally I’d be relunctant to order food because it just doesn’t seem like that type of place. It’s more of a party/drinking type of place. I suppose the best attribute of this place is that it’s big/airy. In other words, there’s lots of elbow room. Speaking of airy, I detected a fair amount of smoke so for those who are allergic to it the Grasshopper probably isn’t your place. Lastly, what is up with the paintings of big boobied nude women riding grasshoppers? Take a look my pic. If this restaurant were in any other city the question would be why? But because this is in Amsterdam I suppose the question is why not?

Awful, unless you are a tourist, and your idea of a good time is to hang out with other tourists, and pay unreasonable amounts for poor service, and overly expensive drinks. No Wi-Fi either. Crap.

Like it, don’t love it! You can find better places to hang however if you are limited on time there are many Grasshoppers and that makes it work

L’ambiance est top, c’est propre, bien fait. Mais attention, c’est clairement plus cher qu’ailleurs, on est bien sur une place touristique.

–Worst attitude coming from the bud tender, he practically threw my baggies at me which I had to label myself. –Their best bud didn’t have a smell and it tasted a little like mold almost. I was very disappointed –this coffee shop is in a perfect touristy location, right on the main strip.

The most overpriced coffeeshop I’ve been to topped off with a server with the worst of attitudes in bland surroundings. Like getting served by a rejected Nazi in a failed 60’s art-deco hospital room. No wonder the place was empty. Only went in cuz my friend is allergic to cigarettes & this place has separate rooms for smokers. If u want to pay to be treated badly just add a few extra bucks and get a pro at the Red Light Dustrict. At least u might have a happy ending!

Any trip to Amsterdam should include a stop at the Grasshopper, day or night. The nighttime visitor is greeted with a bit of a premium in the form of green lighting around the building. The interior of the building is not for the easily offended as the interior walls are covered with murals, each depicting a form of honor being bestowed upon a grasshopper, including one mural where said grasshopper is, shall we say, conjugating with one of his loyal, female, human, subjects. In the context of it all one can’t help but laugh at the mild outrageous over-the-top tongue in cheek artwork. This is Amsterdam after all, a place where nearly anything goes as long as no one gets hurt.(On a side note, this attitude is one of the things I enjoy about Amsterdam as it is). Back to the bar. One of the direct appeals of the Grasshopper is the Heineken. To provide some context, ever since my first trip to Amsterdam I can not drink a Heineken or Amstel Light in the States — it isn’t the same, nowhere close. Freshest Heineken can be found in Amsterdam, to no surprise. However, the Grasshopper takes it a step further. After talking with one of the bartenders we learned that the lines here are serviced by Heineken themselves, ensuring the cleanest and freshest tasting Heineken to ever be had — anywhere! This extra does put a bit of a premium on the beer — I seem to recall about 9 Euro($ 11+) for a beer, but it is worth it. As a couple other reviewers here have noted, a smoke can be had here, and we’re not talking about cigarettes. Roll your own on the deck or the top(3rd) floor in the smoking room, sit back and chill. Reminisce with your buddies about«last night» in the Red Light District and discuss which bars and cafes you’re going to go back and visit again, and which of the Red Light girls you’re hoping to find again.(The girls can be a challenge as they move around in the Red Light and have different schedules, but that is a review for another topic). One of the things I enjoy about visiting the Red Light District is it’s allure to party-goers from all over, where a good time can be had by all(just don’t make a loud racket, as reminded by the police, there are people who live in the RLD). Everyone is there to have a good time together and no good time can be had without at least one stop at the Grasshopper.

Good chill spot – Actually the first«coffee shop» I’ve been to when I first visited. They don’t serve booze so if you’re looking to mix, this ain’t the place. But to smoke and grab a tead and snack, this is a great cozy spot.
