Wonderful café with friendly, personable service, excellent fresh warm scones, and an outstanding lightly smoked salmon sandwich with capers, olives and shredded carrot and beet. Very nice fresh orange juice, and the winter herbal infusion is so light, complex, and nourishing. Close to the train station and easy to hit for a meal before visiting Sintra’s sights. Can’t wait to go back.

We LOVED this place! The food was just wonderful – great vegetarian options! – and the service was delightful. They treated us like family! Charming atmosphere, too.

Great little café/coffee shop between the train station and main part of town with free WiFi and cozy space to chill. Simple salads, sandwiches and some tasty desserts. Very nice ladies working there and a good place to have a quick bit or coffee break in town. Full trip report and photos if you need on .

«Saudade» is one of those untranslatable words that roughly means«a feeling of longing, melancholy, or nostalgia that is supposedly characteristic of the Portuguese or Brazilian temperament.» This name is what first drew us into Café Saudade. This café was the perfect place to grab a meal after our long trek up the hills to see the castles at Sintra. I had the Saudade coffee, tomato quiche, and my travel buddy and I shared the Portuguese-style cheesecake and chocolate cake. Everything was delicious and satisfied our post-hike hunger. The Saudade coffee was made with strong coffee and condensed milk, the quiche looked to be homemade with fresh tomatoes. The cheesecake was interesting and so unlike the American cheesecake I am used to; more dense and bread-like. The chocolate cake was incredibly rich and bittersweet, and was covered with a generous bit of ganache. On top of it all, the café is designed with a cute country charm and its walls are covered with little figurines and sculptures that you can purchase if you want. Loved coming here!
