Old man Chan and I goes back a long way. When I was a little kid, Chan(not at all an old man then) would cycled around the neighborhood selling tofu pudding. He had two buckets on his bicycle and yelled in a loud voice, «TOFUPUDDING! HOTTOFUPUDDING!» Hearing his voice, I’d ask my mom, and then rushed downstairs with my dog to buy some. Better run, or he’d have moved on and I’d have to chase him down the block. Time flies, and Chan and his sweet, delicate, custardy tofu pudding fades to just part of my childhood memory. I figure he has retired. Until one day my mom told me, «Remember that man who sold tofu pudding? He has now opened his own shop.» I hurried to the shop. There he was, along with his wife, his daughters, in a bustling little shop. There it was, the bowl of tofu pudding, silky soft, airy light, with a dash of ginger sugar, just the way it always was. The bowl that began my life long love of tofu. Now they have two types of tofu pudding, the original and one made with black bean, which is not as silky smooth but supposedly better nutritionally. You can order it hot or cold, but I’d say hot tastes better(it’s fresher). Beside tofu pudding, they also sell Chinese tamales(jong), rice rolls(cheung fun) — which my husband declared to be the best in Hong Kong, turnip cake, dumplings, dim sum, buns and more. They also have a very rich and thick home-made soy milk which they recommend finishing in a day or two. Their price is very affordable, at $ 10 a bowl. I was so happy to find this store, and I wanted to leave a tip but the daughter insisted that they don’t accept tips and gave it back to me!
