Chat Hai Congee & Noodle Shop is located in one of the busiest and highly populated districts in the world, Mong Kok in Kowloon. As you would expect, space is at a premium here. The dining area is tiny, but manages to fit in a lot of diners. Like many places in HK, expect to share a table with other customers here if you don’t fill up all the seats. My aunt brought me to this restaurant since I said that I wanted some congee. They also have good wonton mein here too. There are also other Cantonese dishes too than just the basic noodle dishes and congee. Not sure if there is an English menu. I only saw Chinese ones so it might be hard for those unfamiliar with written Chinese. Though you could probably follow the point ordering method or pull up a photo online of what you want to try. Tried four things here. The soup of the day, a wonton mein, tripe with green onions and peanuts and an oyster congee. Soup of the day is not of the Western variety, but rather of the Chinese kind that is like a broth. Healthy and good for those suffering from a sore throat. The wonton mein was tasty. The noodles were fine, but I really liked the wontons here as the shrimp inside is very fresh. As for the tripe, it was pretty flavorless on its own. This is more suited as a topping. To make it flavorable, I would add it to the noodles and/or the congee. Particularly the latter since you can douse the green onions and peanuts as well on top. Finally, the congee had good flavor and has a nice smooth texture. The oysters could have been a bit bigger in size, but given the low price I should not have expected much more than what I got. If you are looking for a no frills spot for congee or wonton place in Mong Kok, check out Chat Hai.
