Giant slices of pizza and decent quality too. It’s not amazing pizza(esp as a former New Yorker) but it’s pretty good for HK standards. Much better than Paisano’s. The slices are about the same size if not bigger but a thinner style(not ‘thin crust’) more like an proper NYC slice. It’s hard to pick from the toppings available when you can see them in the case, so I usually end up with 2 different slices(pepperoni and a veggie combo to offset). 2 slices is more enough for most. I’ll admit they pies don’t always look too appealing in the window after they’ve been sitting out, but after a minute in the pizza oven they’re revived again like new. I’m tempted to stop here multiple times a week for an «appetizer» on my way home.

Perusing IG, i found a photo for this place, but not much pizza photos. Searching their website for a menu, I saw they have calzones. On a nearby trip, I decided to check this place out. It’s more or less a grab and go shop, some tables, nothing fancy or good place to eat on a rainy day. Onto the order… I ordered a calzone and to my surprise, it’s yum and above HK quality(trust me, I have had very lousy calzones elsewhere). Checkmate’s calzone is made with fresh dough, really handmade, and with a chewy crust, like a calzone should. I was still hungry so I got a slice of pepperoni. The slice is huge, even by New York standards. The slice is NY style, has a great crunchy crust(not cracker like) and is foldable. They also advertise the largest pizza in HK, and with a 30″ pizza box hanging on the wall, that’ll be a great eating contest. Lol. Where’s Matt Stonie or Joey Chestnut? I can’t wait to return.

Based on the fact that this place is truly just a spot with no ambiance and a take out joint for pizza by the slice– it’s not bad. Just a stone’s throw away from my apartment, they have descent pizza by HK’s standards– much better than Paissianos in my opinion. Large, large slices with the usual suspects in toppings. A slice of pepperoni will set you back at about $ 35. Great for a quick snack. They deliver as well.
