HK street food for those adventurous enough. Got the 3-combo on a stick(small intestine, squid and kidney). Get it with everything on it(though I wiped off some mustard from the sticks) and bring lots of napkins because it’d be get messy. Line up moves quick.

Awesome Hong Kong style street food. If you are not sure what to get, then just get the 3-combo on a stick with small intestine(細生腸), squid(墨魚), and kidney(腎). Expect a long line but the line moves quickly. And you probably need to speak Chinese to know what’s going on. Well, you can use your finger to point also. It’s not difficult. This is street food, so no seating at all. Buy it, and eat around the area.

I love innards. The crunchy and rubbery textures of innards might be a nightmare for some, but definitely not for the four of us who went in line here and tried a bit of everything. Expect a queue but it moves pretty quick. Order everything! I mean, you’re already ordering innards, for Pete’s sake. That’s adventurous enough. Take another step! Be prepared to bring tissues with you because you’ll need it when you’ve got sauce all over fingers and mouth.(And you’re in HK – there’s no way you don’t have a packet of tissues.) Stand on a random street corner and eat the innards on a stick. This is real street food.

Oh man, how come I just stumbled upon all these HK places on Unilocal?!I just came back from my HK trip just 3 months ago so let my Hong Kong Unilocal reviews begin! This little snack place is one of the top most well known place to visit in hk. The line up can be horrifying, but I assure you that it moves quite fast! If you don’t know what to order here, just go with the specials they have on the walls. Be sure to know what you want to get before you get to them otherwise they might get annoyed! I got the $ 23HKD special with one stick of jumbo squid, one stick of small intestines, and one stick of turkey kidney, with hoisin sauce and spicy mustard. Holy shnikies were they delicious! The mustard definitely adds a bit of a kick to it similar to how wasabi cleared all of your sinuses. Now you may be thinking that intestines and kidneys are some bizarre foods, but do yourself an adventurous favor and try it out! You won’t be disappointed.

Return rate 100%!!! No matter what time you come, there will always be a line. But as all things Hong Kong goes, the lines move very fast. Make sure you know what you want and have your money ready(small bills get more love here). If you are unsure, just get the signature(肥姐三寶), which consists of small intestine(細生腸), squid tentacles(墨魚) and turkey kidney(火雞腎). I also enjoyed their liver(腎), pork head meat(豬頭肉), pork heart tip meat(豬心頂) and large intestine(大生腸) immensely but the bills add up fast. Oh, don’t forget the mustard and sweet sauce. Find a corner and chow down. You may want to queue again by the time you finish your skewers. There are many similar street food vendors selling the same type of skewers in Hong Kong but so far, none has come even close to the flavor here(except 肥仔 perhaps, since they are related…

This is a famous street food stand in Mongkok where you can get your skewers of intestines, gizzards, tongues, squids, octopi, and other stuff that would gross out anyone who isn’t from Asia. I’ll admit I was really scared to try this kind of stuff in my first trip to HK several years ago but nowadays no trip to HK is complete without eating at snack stands like this. I like to get the large intestines. Remember to get some sauce for anything you get here, it makes it a lot tastier(and colorful). Definitely worth a stop if you’re shopping in Mongkok.

肥姐小食店 Fei Jie Snack Shop, is da shiznit!!! Many of you overseas may have first heard about this place on Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations: Hong Kong. He was taken here by then blogger Josh Tse(a pioneer of HK blogging, who has since moved on to other projects), only to be yelled at by the elder owner«Fei Jie» herself. Truth be told, she is not that«fei»(chubby), not even close… but her attitude is definitely of the streets. This shop is very easy to spot. Pretty much any given time of day, you will just need to look for the«dragon» or «snake» formation lines. When I see lines for ramen in Hong Kong or the USA, I cringe. But when I see a long line for perfectly marinated innards skewers here, it makes me shed a tear. Of happiness, bliss, and joy. This is incredibly hard to explain to foreigners. And certainly many will not comprehend recommending this place to them. But for those of us who grew up eating street food(back then it was not even clean), Fei Jie is one of the last surviving classics that preserves that old school flavor. If you love innards(mostly pork), secret delicious marinades(especially in Chiu Chow cuisine), then the skewers here are a must for you. Follow these rules and you will not end up like George Costanza in the Soup Nazi episode of Seinfeld. — Fei Jie, much like all other establishments is cash only. Have as close to exact change ready as possible — Know exactly what you want before you get to the ordering counter. If not, look at the menu or counter — Tell them if you want mustard and sweet sauce. You have to say«yes» to both — Do not try to take photos up close. If you do it from further away or when they are not looking then more power to you. — This is a «skewer standing bar». Find a spot on the street, but do not block the walkways or stand in front of other businesses. Trash cans nearby to dunk away the sticks and paper. — Be prepared to instaBook/FaceGram/TwitTwat your skewer picture with one hand, while holding your skewers in another. Got mustard and sweet sauce over the skewers? Good… because they add depth, color, and clarity to your picture. And they come out so beautifully it makes Hong Kongers weep. So what to get? 細生腸 — small intestine 大生腸 — large intestine 墨魚 — squid(tentacles) 火雞腎 — turkey kidney You can also get sausage or pork tongue. I may enjoy a sexcellent tomato sauce slow braised innards dish(e.g. honeycomb tripe) Italian/Roman style, but you have to give it up to the Cantonese who also take this art form to a different level.

Discovered this shop recently when I went to lesson nearby. There are so many people always queuing up that I started to wonder is it really that good. After lesson at around 10:30pm I saw the queue is a lot shorter so I decided to try. But by that time a lot of the good stuff is sold out. I managed to get the cuttlefish, the pig intestine, kidney, and heart(lol they sound quite normal in Chinese but in English they seem really gross somehow) Anyways, I am quite pleasantly surprised. The food is really fresh, there is no bad smell or taste at all, given that some of them are internal organs, and I had some previous experience at other places where they would have a weird amino kind of smell and taste. But here everything taste good. I think it’s nice to see that the fat is removed from the intestinal parts, so it’s really clean and lean, and less cholesterol problems perhaps. The texture is kind of chewy, but soft at the same time, a little like jelly maybe. The pig kidney is probably more chewy and less tender, so I think I like the cuttlefish and pig intestines more, Anyhow I really don’t feel like I am eating intestines or internal organs or anything gross at all. The sauce on top is really amazing, there are two types, first the sweet brown paste like the sauce for rice rolls, and the second is the mustard sauce for people who like it spicy. Honestly together they make everything taste so much better and more exciting(I guess I have too much mustard). I know a lot of people probably don’t like eating internal organs that much, especially cooked in street food stalls, but this I think everyone can and should try. It’s really good, and addictive. I still try to get some every week after my lesson if I can. Hm, Maybe think of them as familial members of foie gras(lol)?

To me, this is a place of legend. When I was still in my early 20s, or may be even earlier, I have been brought to this joint by an older friend of mine and that was the first ever time I partake a skewer of their signature cold cuts. I could still remember what my friend had ordered; the pale discs of cuttle fish tentacles with a vivid orange exterior. What amazed me most is that the flesh was so meltingly tender that it seems like you are biting through marshmallow; normally cephalopods of such size would be tough n hard to chewy when over cooked, but this joint definitely knows how to prepare the meats. Other than the cuttle fish, i also like their pig’s liver and hearts. Heart is actually just another piece of muscle but less stringy; so for all those squeamish people out there, take a leap of faith and take a bite into it, it’s just a piece of muscle~ The liver is a totally different story. It’s rich, it’s soft, it’s almost like foie gras just a bit more solid. Whats exceptional is that when you bite into the piece of organ meat, there is a strange hint of sweetness hitting you tongue which makes the experience that much better. Food good as such will naturally attract a large crowd to go for their food; but since it is in the heart of MK, not only local crowds are lining up, mainland tourists as well. It’s a shame that the lines are so very long every time i walk pass the shop and I am so deterred from buying from it. It has been a really long while since i last tasted the food there.
