Hai Nan Shao Ye

I am a big fan of Hainanese chicken rice. I like it so much that I would sometimes make it at home, as it’s pretty hard to find in the U.S. But it’s a hassle to make.
In Hong Kong, of course I don’t have to go through all that trouble. There are many places for Hainanese chicken, but this one for overall value and taste is not a bad choice.
We usually order the set menu, which is a good value (a two person set can easily feed three) and allows us to sample many of the items on the regular menu.
For their bak kut teh (rib soup), the Malaysian style has a strong herbal, dong quai flavor. The Singaporean one is loaded with black pepper. Either one will get your body warm up quick.
For appetizer, my favorite is the coffee sauce spare ribs, and the satay with the delicious dipping sauce. The salad, on the other hand, is a bit wilted and I definitely won’t order again.
For entrée, needless to say I have to order the chicken rice. The chicken is very tender, but I would love the rice to have more fragrance. Another winner is the plum and lemongrass pork belly. You can’t really go wrong with pork belly and the unique sauce makes it a winner.
Their lychee tea is very delicious too, and the service here is excellent. They keep checking to see if anything is needed, and refill the water as fast as we can drink.
