Hong Kong Museum of Correctional Services Museum

Not to be confused with Stanley Prison (which is a maximum security prison for male offenders), the Hong Kong Correctional Services Museum, which is sometimes fondly referred to by tourists a Stanley Prison, is actually pleasant afternoon out.
As you can imagine, it is a museum aimed at all of those curious about crime and punishment in Hong Kong, and whilst much of this subject is quite morbid, it is done in an interesting and educational way.
The museum itself covers about 160 years of prison life in Hong Kong, including some very interesting times during WW2 when the prison was used as an internment camp for British colonial class prisoners, and the years it was used as a facility for the Vietnamese boat people. Also in the museum are loads of videos, artefacts (like home made shanks made out of toothbrushes, and crack pipes made out of biros), and photographs, as well as a rather gruesome mock gallows, and imitation prison cells. Super interesting fact, most of the prison guards back in the day were Sikhs.
The museum is never very busy, I suppose most folks coming this way are heading to the bars and beaches, but for me this is a very interesting way to «kill» a few hours.
Best way to get here is by bus from HK MTR station or taxi. You could spend an afternoon wallowing in historical misery, and then stroll back to Stanley for a more normal evening of dinner and beers. When taking the bus, be careful to get out at the right stop. If you go all the way to the end, you will end up in Stanley Prison, which isn’t such a nice afternoon out.
