Jim’s Tailor Workshop

I can only recommend Jim’s Tailor!!! Great customer service and knowledge about suits/​shirts. I will in the US now but still order my custom made shirts from him. Every order has been a hit so far and the shirts always arrive on time in the US with no hassle.
Also definitely beats the MTM prices here in the US who usually order their goods from HK anyways.

I had a suit and three shirts made at Jim’s. The tailors are very easy to talk to and help to get you set up. I wanted something turned around with two fittings in 72 hours and they accommodated, although I think less time would have been impossible. (Worth noting that I hear a lot about a tailored suit requiring 4 or more fittings and I think it is crap unless you are really going for something extraordinary. Two gets the fit very close to you — much more so than anything off the rack, and additional fittings end up only tweaking little bits and pieces.)
A suit for $ 650usd came out with a good fit, although I wish I would have pushed more on the cut. It is more of an «Asian» style with the longer and more rigid front that is characteristic (to my thinking) of old man suits, but not exactly fashionable for those in their 30s. I asked for some adjustments in the preliminary fitting that didn’t turn out as expected before the final. Construction pretty good, but def a heavy lining, so it drapes well but is not very soft.
The shirts were good quality. Unfortunately I had an issue with them in the wash, and I wrote Jim’s about this. They sent me (promptly) 3 new shirts, free of charge. Overall, I can’t think of how the customer service could be any better. I would recommend them (especially due to the super customer service), and will be back myself. My only advice is to figure out exactly what you want and make it very clear, I think I would be more satisfied with my suit if I had done so.

Buying a tailored suit was never really on my mind– I had always gone for mainstream brands and yes, I needed it trimmed here and there because I’m not as fit as an A&F model but it seemed less troublesome. I hate going to fittings and I just want my suit here and now.
As you get older though, I guess you start get a bit picky. Your suits get more expensive and then you start to think, well, if I’m going to be paying this sort of price then perhaps I should go for something more personalized. After all, if you want your suits to have a really good fit then tailoring is the only way to go. Hence I went off and tried Jim’s tailor on the recommendation of a friend.
For the uninitiated, its a rather daunting experience because there are just so many style and patterns to choose from. Where in the past black was black– there are now 10 shades of black. You get to choose the material too, is the suit for summer or winter? Double or single breasted– the list goes on. In the end I just opted for the most traditional style with the help of the tailors there (I do apologize I forgot to catch their names as they were very nice to me). I ended up getting some shirts done as well and all I could say is that the total outcome was brilliant. Instead of making do with a slightly ill fitting suit I now have everything I want.
There are cheaper tailors out there– indeed– a suit here costs around 5 times as much in the cheaper places but the difference is in the details. If you are still questioning this then I would say stick to the mainstream brands because chances are you wouldn’t notice the difference. You’re worth it!

There are many places one can get a custom made suit in HK, with tailors varying greatly in price and quality. One of my particular favourites is Jim’s Tailor Workshop. They are towards to higher end of the price and quality bracket, not quite Ascot Chang but better than E-​Rave. Based in the Admiralty Centre, there are two stores next to each other, one for suits and one for shirts.
If you are going for a suit, expect to pay about HKD7000 for three pieces in good English wool. Of course the cost is based on the fabric, but to give you a bench mark, a similar suit at E-​Rave would cost around HKD4000.
Ask for Henry Lo, the current owner of Jim’s Tailor Workshop. He is a stiff fellow, but has a good eye for tailoring and will spend time working with you to get a really good cut. Beware though, his expertise and experience is so extensive, that if have your own ideas, and he disagrees with them, he can be quite inflexible.
Having said that, all the suits that I have had tailored from Jim’s are great. They are all close fitted, but are roomy enough to be comfortable. Just watch your weight with the dim sum, otherwise your suits won’t last very long.
The suits can be made in a hurry, but as a local, I tend to have them done in about a week, which is considered «slow». If you are visiting, I’m sure you can have them turned around in about 48 hours.
Jim’s is my first port of call for a suit, especially if I expect to wear it a number of times like in the office. If I want a one time use suit, say for a wedding, I would get it made more cheaply elsewhere.
