Oh my god, their black forest and blueberry cakes are super good!!! I wouldn’t recommend the lemon meringue pie but otherwise their cakes are super soft and fluffy. The mango cakes/tarts are really fragrant and good but the mangos themselves are a little sour :(. Overall it was a good experience but customer service was ehhh.

Knowing that I have a sweet tooth, one of my colleagues recommended me to check out this Asian bakery chain in Hong Kong. Most railway stations and shopping malls have a Maxim’s Cakes. The first time, I got two individual cakes — Tiramisu and Coffee Walnut. The cake was spongy but had excess rich cream. The second time, my family and I got the 10″ Honeybee Cake shaped like a beehive which had multiple layers of cake filled with cream and honey jelly. I liked how the cream was light, not too sweet, and fluffy.

Whenever one of my friends have a birthday, Maxim is always our bakery of choice for getting a birthday cake. Why? There are tons to choose from, there’s a Maxim almost everywhere and Maxim is much cheaper than a lot of artisanal cakeries out there. $ 300+ for a cake that looks better than it tastes? No — no thank you. One of the best things about Maxim is that they have a great website with a wonderful ordering system. From the website, you can browse through the variety of cakes, place an order and type out the words you want the chocolate plate to read. You can also select which branch you want to collect the cake at and when too. This is really helpful if you’re simply too busy to run by a Maxim’s and do it in person! The cakes at Maxim generally don’t disappoint. I’ve had quite a few — the Angel and Devil cakes, a couple of the mango ones, and one that was a limited edition for some time — the rainbow cake! The Angel and Devil cakes are a classic — both kind of resemble the shape of a halo, and the Angel cake is a cream chiffon while the Devil cake is a chocolate chiffon. Both are very smooth and light, and aren’t ridiculously sweet. I normally am not a fan of fruit cakes just because the fruits that they adorn the cakes with taste really artificial, but that’s not the case with the Maxim ones. For example, the mangoes taste pretty fresh to me. I wish they still had that rainbow cake — the cake is a solid creamy white color on the outside, but take your first cut and you’ll see that the inside is beautifully layered with pastel rainbow colors! Surprisingly, it doesn’t taste very artificial — it’s sweet, not too heavy and just delicious. While I did say that Maxim’s cakes are more affordable than many other bakeries, if you’re ordering one of the special 3D cakes, they will set you back quite a bit because there’s so much more design and effort needed to make them. For example, the kids’ cake called ‘Lovely Bear’ looks shockingly like an adorable stuffed bear and it’s a whopping $ 650! It does say online that it’s fit for 16 – 20 people though. I’ve never had a 3D cake from Maxim before so I wouldn’t know, but if they’re anything like the other Maxim cakes I’ve had, you won’t be disappointed!
