Oddies

Heard about the craze over this dessert store. And since I was around the Wan Chai area, I decided to give it a try.
I had been wanting to try Hong Kong egglets and this place has interesting flavors. Came here around 10am and unfortunately I had to lunch at a nearby restaurant and wait for it to open at 1pm.
I had trouble finding this store. Went to the Lan store and asked for direction. You would need to slightly turn right at the traffic light intersection. If you see Café De Coral, it is on the opposite site.
At around 12.50pm, I decided to queue up. Saw two staffs strolling in and had to wait at least ½ hour before being served. And I was the first customer in line. A local decided to tell the staffs that there was a line forming outside. Due to the long wait, some customers decided to give it a miss.
I was eyeing on the chocolate egglet (snack after heavy lunch). The batter had lack of taste. I like the crunchiness of the egglet but the chocolate spread that they used was not sweet enough for my liking.
Price wise it was decent. Unfortunately did not live up to my expectation :(

On my last day in HK I was so sad to realize I would never find this place in the US. The waffle things are something else. Perfectly crispy exterior with fluffy hot dough on the inside (no fillings here). Each little egg of perfection comes off so this treat was made to share. I loved everything about it and only wished there were more stomach real estate to get one of these each day I was here but alas, HK has so many places for good food. We also tried the fish curry balls-​delicious fish balls but the curry was extremely spicy for my wildly mild palate. Came early and at a weird time so there was no line but when I walked by again at around 5pm, there was quite a line. They make the waffles fresh so you can be sure they will be piping hot and ready to pop off. Be careful not to burn yourself. A convenient milk tea place is next door. This is a hole in the wall establishment with photos plastering the exterior. Blink and you might miss it, but the locals know a good snack and dessert place so make sure to stop by.

I had so much trouble finding this place. I was across the street looking at 149 Wan Chai Rd but no Oddies. Turns out it was around the corner along the smaller street.
NIGHT WOLF:
All chocolate lovers should get this! I’m not a huge fan of any kind of swirl soft-​serve unless in small amounts but paired with a piece of egg waffle, which was chocolate chip for Night Wolf, SO GOOD! & very smart to add more things at the bottom of the cup for when you finish the egg waffle, you won’t be bored with eating the leftover soft-​serve. I tasted tiny mango pieces and banana pieces and grounded graham crumbles? (I didn’t read the full description of the night wolf)
The other option I think was called The Mob which had black sesame egg waffle and matcha vanilla swirl.

This location is closed on Monday’s but their second location in Gough Street is open with a LIMITED menu!

Tried the night wolf and the mob. For sure this is the place for the young person. There is a whole lot going on in each cup. I think the egg waffle was just terrific. I would next time keep it simple and order just the gelato with an egg waffle but I am not local and some of the components are too foreign and a little crazy BUT that is what trips are for, to try new things so I am glad I did:) No regrets and I highly suggest checking this place out.

Are the freaky sundaes truly worth it?, likely not. Are they worth trying?, oh yes! Flavored waffle, ice cream, something you love, something you hate, at a reasonable price considering the effort needed to make the statues of sweets. Not all the ingredients hit my flavor profile, but it’s apparent if Katie and I could swap our components freely, we’d both be exceedingly happy. Not that the strange jelly would go properly with dark choco, but would easily beat the passion fruit panna cotta for me. I hope the place is able to expand and offer more odd options.

I think Oddies got a little over-​hyped for me, so that when I finally made it out to the location, I was a bit disappointed, really. Oddies is a little hole-​in-​the-​wall with standing room for one customer, and a limited (albeit thoughtful) menu.
The boy and I ended up sharing:
+ THE NIGHTWOLF (Italian low fat soft gelato twisted with 66% dark chocolate served with butter crumbs, caramelized banana ice cream, passion fruit panna cotta, brownie, chocolate chip eggettes and crunchy flakes)
…if it sounds like there was WAY too much going on in one cup, then you would be correct. The banana ice cream and panna cotta at the bottom was more of an odd, unwelcome flavor combo after the chocolatey-​goodness on the top. The boy and I ended up tossing ours after getting about ¹⁄₃ of the way through it, just too much sugar and non-​complimentary flavors.
Fun concept, just a little too eclectic execution.

I used to work within walking distance of Oddies, so we would often swing by for dessert after lunch. The hype began when they first paired Italian gelato with Hong Kong-​style eggettes, and their frequently changing combinations keep people interested.
If you don’t want to splurge on a combo, a simple serving of gelato is equally as indulgent – go for the mixed swirl. The 66% dark chocolate is too sweet on its own, and the original tastes that much better with a little chocolate in it.
Note that there is no seating available (it is strictly take-​away), so you can either eat your treat in front of the shop or walk up Burrows Street and round the corner for a little more breathing room.

After stalking this on Unilocal and Instagram, I knew I couldn’t leave Hong Kong without coming here. I walked almost 1.5 miles roundtrip to come here late at night before it closed because I wanted to try this, and they don’t have this in the States. I kind of wished I came here earlier in the trip so that I could have come back multiple times to try all of the flavors.
Between 9:30 — 9:45 pm on a Thursday night (they close at 10 pm), there wasn’t really a line (I had to wait 5 min) to order, and then it took them a little while (5 – 10 min) to make the eggette, but that just means it is all freshly made. They only have 2 people working: one person making the waffles and sundaes and one person ringing people up and helping assemble — it’s a small operation, so be patient — it’s worth the wait.
The menu consists of 3 sundaes (2 with eggettes, one without), 2 special flavors of gelato that seem to rotate, regular soft serve, and unique flavors of eggettes. For a sundae, it will set you back $ 52 – 55 HKD.
I couldn’t make a decision on what to order between the 2 sundaes: Night Wolf (vanilla & dark chocolate gelato, passionfruit pannacotta, brownie & chocolate chip eggettes), or The Mob (black sesame mochi eggettes, vanilla gelato, matcha ice cream, apple yuzu jelly, and matcha sauce). Since I was already full from over-​eating on dumplings and noodles all week, I went for the lighter sounding dessert, The Mob. Plus, I was in a matcha-​withdrawal from a recent Japan visit.
The Mob did not disappoint, it was light, citrusy, and all the different flavors complemented each other well. The eggette was so interesting with small pieces of mochi in the batter, and the black sesame was not overpowering. The matcha ice cream mixed with vanilla gelato was delicious, and the apple yuzu jelly had such an interesting texture — slightly tart and sweet.
Worth the money, time, and calories for such an interesting and unique dessert. I’ll definitely be back on future visits to Hong Kong. I only wish I had come earlier so that I could have tried more things, or had someone else to visit with so that I could have tried more flavors.

Quite pricey, but definitely worth the trek for a picture/​first try. It’s a tiny shop as other reviewers have stated so plan to wait outside the shop or by the corner when they prepare it fresh for you! It’s silly though that you can’t mix and match… they’re making it from scratch anyway so it would be nice if people can say they don’t like a particular kind of eggettes and substitute it with a different kind instead. Overall not too sweet, but definitely filling.

After seeing the photos on facebook, I knew I had to try one of these parfaits. On a hot and humid summer day in Hong Kong, Oddies was the perfect place for a quick afternoon tea and thankfully there was no wait at all on a Thursday. I ordered the Mob and my mom ordered the Loner.
The Loner consist of Taiwanese pineapple pastry eggettes, Italian low fat soft gelato, fresh lychee, caramelised briche croutons, sweet corn ice cream, and toasted coconut tuiles. ($ 55 HKD)
The Mob consist of black sesame mochi eggettes, Italian low fat soft gelato, apple yuzu jelly, cirtrus crunchy flakes, homemade matcha ice cream, and drizzled with rich match sauce.
Unfortunately due to the heat, the gelato melted into soup but the flavours were still prominent and none overpowered each other.
Besides parfaits, Oddies serves Italian low fat soft gelato in a cone or eggettes with crazy flavours like Mediterranean, Chinese sausage.
I usually don’t spend $ 10 CAD on ice cream back at home but in Hong Kong, the creative minds in the dessert world tend to empty my wallet faster than I can eat bubble waffles.

I came back here three days in a row. Do i need to say more? I love creative dessert, with impressive presentation to boost.
My favorite is also the crowd’s favorite — the night Night Wolf which has 66% dark chocolate gelato and chocolate chips eggette. I recommend this if you like dark chocolate.
I hear they change their menu periodically too with limited edition flavors.

Just to be fair — I’ll come back again and it’s very likely I’ll ra-​rate this shop. But it’s 3-​star for the moment.
Why? I came here for the night wolf, but ended up getting The Mob thanks to my partner. I don’t mind either anyway. Matcha favor ice-​cream, vanilla yogurt, with black sesame egg waffle — seemed like a very easy winning formula.
The waiting time was okay even though there was a queue of a few people.
Now the egg waffle was flesh and crispy, albeit not as perfect as the traditional old man egg waffle on some random street at Shum Shui Po or Sheung Shui. Black sesame gave you a good kick too. The ice cream and yogurt mix was very good too.
But now if you remember that, it’s probably the hottest summer I ever have in town. The whole thing melted down in less than 10 minutes. The egg waffle collapsed into the ice cream and became very soggy, and the ice cream become a lukewarm milkshake. We had to throw away the remaining half of the whole thing because it went from hero to zero in a hurry.
Not really Oddies’s fault to be fair, it is what it is during summer time anyway. I’ll definitely come back from the night wolf some time.
By the way, McDonald’s Sunday costs probably around $ 12 and an egg waffle costs $ 15, yet this bad boy costs you HKD$ 55. Can’t really afford it every day!

Came here on a hot, muggy afternoon with my nephews. This teeny shop produces huge portions of gelato and eggette waffles. We had the Night Wolf and a large dark chocolate cone. It was good, but I was surprised at how sweet it was for a Hong Kong dessert establishment. Usually, Chinese people do not like Western dessert-​levels of sugar in their sweets. It was even a bit too much for me.
The Night Wolf contains layers various flavors with a chocolate chip and brownie eggette wrapped around the inner edge of the cup. There were tons of chocolate gelato with a bit of passionfruit panna cotta at the bottom. There was also caramelized banana ice cream in the layers, but the heavy chocolate covered it up so much that I couldn’t really tell when I had hit banana. Crunchy flakes at the bottom gave it an interesting texture amidst all the smooth gelato.
Looking forward to trying The Mob (centered on green tea flavors) and The Homer (Guinness beer ice cream and a donut? Cool!). Super cool place to have an interesting mix of east and west desserts.

Cashier was very nice and friendly. Her English is really good which came at me with a surprise. All their food on Instagram looked delicious but she told us that they changed food, I’m assuming seasonally. We tried all of the flavors they had which was the night something (I forgot), the homer and the mob. The night something is heavy, and has a lot of chocolate. The homer is beer flavored while the mob is green matcha. They all were unique but my favorite was the mob. The bread that comes with it is a nice touch with the ice cream. It’s also warm because they make it right behind the counter. Anyways, I’m glad I tried them; it helps with this very dry heat in Hong Kong.

Oddies is a cute little hole in the wall type place in Wan Chai. I went after seeing its Insta-​fame through many bloggers, and the ice cream and eggette is delicious! I got the Night Wolf, and my brother ordered the Mob (the Matcha one).
The ice cream itself reminded me of a your average soft-​serve American ice cream in a food court. Granted, it was delicious, but nothing out-​of-​the-​world special! However, the eggette (egg waffles) dipped with the ice cream was DELICIOUS. At the bottom of the cup was also a base of banana ice cream and passion fruit panna cotta.
For me, Oddies is one of those «go once, try it, snap a cute Insta-​worthy photo, and you’re good.» The location is out of the way, but I would definitely recommend to go & try it for yourself!

A small shop in Wanchai, a bit far away from the main business districts, but it has a lot of loyal customers and people lining up to get their fixings for a sweet tooth. Be prepared for a 30mins+ wait for you to get your food.
However, it was totally worth it. The warm eggettes were fused with flavoured ice cream, creating a unique dessert. Imagine a waffle sundae, except the waffles are eggettes filled with chocolate. Wait — that’s not all. There are fruits layered in the ice cream so every bite is truly a surprise.
They have quite a few different sundaes here. For example, Night Wolf, the one I had, had vanilla and chocolate gelato, passionfruit panna cotta, banana slices, and eggettes with chocolate in it.
No seating though! Be prepared to eat right outside the store.

When they first got popular I would see the line and think there was no way it could be that good. Colleagues said it was amazing and I was still skeptical. Then I broke down one night and tried it…
The Night Wolf is out of this world good. The combination of dark chocolate gelato and chocolate chip «eggette» (gei dan chai) is incredible.
The chocolate in the gelato is properly dark, 66%, so not too sweet. While the warm, sweet, perfectly cooked eggette is an excellent contrast that pair together perfectly.
There’s always a line but come with friends and the time will pass quickly. And it’s definitely worth it.

MY FAVORITE ICE CREAM IN HONG KONG. I miss this so much!
If you’re into ice cream, this is the number one spot to check out! Their flavors are so ridiculous and amazing. It’s a crazy combination of flavors that work perfectly together. With all that goes into the ice cream, the 50HKD is so worth it.
The wait is forever. I would normally take a star off because of this, but I didn’t since they can’t help it. With all the detail that goes into their concoctions, the wait is justified. Usually there are only 2 people working so you can really feel the hard work they put into their delicacies.
Now off to explain what they have on their menu:
Eggpuffs/​eggettes are kind of like a waffle. I like mine to be crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside but theirs is more on the softer side. Nonetheless, it’s delicious. I love how they time it to cook their eggettes perfectly. I tried one of the savory eggettes and wasn’t impressed with the flavor since the savoriness didn’t pop. They also have Ice cream cones of their low fat soft serve.
…Their specialty desserts though! Soooo good and great combinations. I’ve tried all of the following desserts, and my favorite is Ohh tea! and night wolf. The best way to eat it is to start from the top and scoop till the bottom to get all of the elements in one bite!
Dr. Oddie — which is Italian low fat soft gelato served with chrysanthemum poached pears, gingery oat crumbs, honey ginger ice cream, honey jelly, butter crumbs, citrus caramel sauce, sprinkled with raspberry crisp $ 52hkd/​7usd
Ohh Tea! — which is Italian low fat soft gelato served on a bed of earl grey bergamot panna cotta, caramel apple, butter crumbs, organic jasmine tea sorbet, hibiscus tea espuma, strawberry tea caramel popcorn, and a chocolate dipped teabag $ 52hkd/​7usd
Night Wolf — which is vanilla and chocolate gelato, buttery crumbs, banana ice cream, passionfruit panna cotta, brownie chip egg puffs
Mont Blanc — Italian low fat gelato served with crunchy meringue, candied chestnut, chestnut vanilla ice cream, butter crumbs, black currant compote, rose champagne espuma and handcrafted Christmas tree.

Every time I want to come here, it ends up being on a Monday when Oddies Foodies has its day off!!! Gahhh. Till this past Friday, I decided to treat myself to some Oddies Foodies after lunch as my dessert. Finallllllly and, Yummm. ;)
The store is quite tiny so make sure to keep your eye out for it, but let’s be frank, you probably won’t miss it since there seems to be a nonstop flow of people waiting to get their hands on Oddies!
I’m not a fan of banana flavored items, so I wasn’t crazy about the banana ice cream, but I did like everything else, especially the eggettes /​egg waffles! My friend and I were surprised at how crispy the egg waffles were — I love crispy egg waffles! Since the dark chocolate is 66%, don’t expect the chocolate to be extremely sweet (which in my opinion is a good thing since overly sweet desserts could be extremely overpowering and just simply too much). Everything was balanced well so I’d be interested in coming back to get this again (without the banana ice cream this time) as well as try other things. *Note — I got this without the passion fruit panna cotta since the panna cotta has gelatin :(
They also have different flavors of egg waffles — I can’t wait to try their Vanilla Pudding flavor next time I visit!
