Trafalgar is my go to bar in Hong Kong to have a pint with my friends. Their trivia nights are always a blast, with the rather edgy team names that people come up with and the occasionally humourous questions. This is by no means the best looking bar around, nor is it the most spacious, but it is definitely a fun place to be, as there’s always so much going on. If there isn’t trivia, someones playing beer pong or shooting darts. Drink service can sometimes be awkward, in that they may either rush you to order a drink(i.e. wait next to you as you pick a drink off the menu) or the waitresses are so busy with everyone else that you’re practically invisible to them. As such, it’s usually good to go there with a regular. Trafalgar has a great selection of beers and ciders. Hoegaarden is definitely one of my favourites, and as for ciders, just ask for some recommendations. They’ve also got plenty of other drinks should you require something a little stronger, including a wide range of brandies, whiskies and wines, as long as you and your wallet are equipped for a typical Hong Kong night out, Trafalgar probably won’t suck your wallet dry. If you are great a general knowledge, you should definitely go to one of their trivia nights. The winning team get’s a free round of shots!

The Trafalgar is a British pub, located in the heart of Wan Chai. It is a bit of a dingy affair, with the least welcoming entrance way in HK(up the elevator to the 5th floor, which opens into the darkest corridor in the world), but once inside, it is a reasonably sized bar, with an outside terrace. As to be expected, the bar serves a pretty standard range of beers, wines and spirits, which is no more or less than anywhere else in this area. However, it does come up trumps with the food. Look, it’s not going to be the best gourmet cooking in the world, this is British pub food that we are talking about after all. It is mainly beige foods that have been baked or fried, but there is a very large selection of dishes that will make you pine for England’s green and pleasant lands, including; proper steak and kidney pudding, fish and chips, bangers and mash, cottage pie, and a selection of true British delights like pasta and chicken parmigiana — ahem, err yeah! The meals a-la-carte will set you back about HKD150, but the portions are generous. For the best value, come here for lunch, where a main meal with soup or salad starter, will set you back around HKD70. Again, it’s not the best you will have, but for a tasty quick bite, it is perfectly good. Be warned, with such a good value meal deal, the HK office workers come here in their droves, so you should book for lunch. My only gripe about this place is the serious lack of English speaking staff. Try asking for a lager shandy, and the spotty 12 year old kid will look at you blankly as though you have just ask for the secret to The Masons. Try and get the nice Filipino manageress to serve you. She at least knows the difference between the steak and kidney pudding, and the steak and kidney pie. Last note, they have quiz nights on Tuesdays, which are always a good laugh, and loads of sports on the TVs. They sometimes project games onto the wall of the neighbouring building.
