XYZ

I was looking for SoulCycle in HK while I was on vacation and was surprised to see that they haven’t made their way in HK yet. Thanks to Unilocal,I found XYZ and took two classes with them during my stay.
The work out is a lot like SoulCycle, high intensity intervals, a short section with weights and a high resistance intervals. Feels and hopefully looks a lot like dancing on a bike!
The vibe of XYZ is very cool, hip and sexy with top quality sound and lighting systems. The studio is equipped with lockers (no locks needed), showers and towels. The class fee also includes shoe rental.
While XYZ is not cheap, it’s a great way to get your sweat on!

All right, I’ll let you in on something real deal. I HATE fitness classes of any shape, form, or fashion. I’m uncoordinated, I march to the (un-​rhythmic) beat of my own drum, I hate authority (like to a reasonable degree), I hate the embarrassment threatened with each and every move, etc. However, Kat is the bomb diggity dot com slash best-​spin-​instructor-​of-​life slash don’t challenge me on this, because I will fight you over it.
Disclaimer is this — Kat is a personal BFF of mine, but I do mean this with the whole of my XYZ soul, I think I might be in love with spinning. .. ? I’m having a difficult time grappling with this revelation myself, but seriously wowzer, I don’t think I’ve ever been so close to dying, yet feeling so invigorated and fierce in my life. And believe you me, this gal has seen/​lived through some crazy schitt.
Okay sure, I’ve never spun (spinned?) anywhere but here, but my other BFF with me has been all over Houston, Texas, USA, spinning her heart out at all the gyms and studios and she has confirmed that XYZ is by far, the best spin studio she’s ever been to and Kat is the best instruction she’s ever had. And I’m obviously inclined to believe because whoah, it was freaking fun. Yes I made that declaration, about exercise!
So XYZ prides itself in being a more elite sort of spin experience. The studio does very closely resemble a cave and well, the lighting isn’t that great in the locker rooms and throughout, but it sort of exudes a more calming state of mind to contrast with the frenetic cycling madness in actual spinning space. The nice touches include, free apples, complimentary towels, shampoo, lotion, deodorant, hair dryers (to use in the locker room), shoes and locker rentals, and I’m sure I’m forgetting something else. It feels almost slightly spa-​like, maybe?
I can only comment on Kat’s classes and this is something I already knew but Kat’s playlist is off the chain. Admittedly, I am terrible at compiling playlist, so I may just find this gift especially admirable for that reason, but the music does really enhance the ride from start to finish. Also, Kat was highly effective at motivating me, yes, even me, to spin my heart out. Now, I don’t know if my dial turns were all that honest, but I sure as hell felt like death was the only escape during well timed intervals during the rides — which of course means I was actually pushing myself! This is not something I often do when I’m mindlessly stepping away on the elliptical machine at my home gym. Additionally, the pain, the exquisite pain of agitating muscles I never knew I had. .. pain is weakness leaving the body, right?
After participating in several classes, I can absolutely understand the addictiveness of spinning. I’ve toyed with the idea of seeking out a few at my home gym, but my friend’s warning about their inferior content and instruction has prevented me from actually signing up. So. .. I’ll just be mindlessly high stepping on my elliptical until XYZ decides to go worldwide.

I’m not the most athletic person you’ll know, that’s for sure. And the older you get, the more reasons you need to lift your arse from your seat to get some exercise.
I was never a big fan of spin studio. I’d rather ride a bike at Shatin than staying indoors with some overly competitive gang fighting for the highest scores /​fastest records, well, ironically on their same respective spots.
Until I heard about XYZ, obviously. That becomes a new rule of mine recently — if a business has been mentioned by three or more friends around me, I have to try it. And as a disclaimer, I’ve been here for try-​out class only, although I’m very likely to come back as a regular.
First of all, hell yeah it’s a like clubbing at Play or Volar, but with both of your feet on pedals. When the class started and the light dimmed, the vibe was really exciting, but minus the competitive bs. It was kind of relaxing in its way if you think of it, as it was my very first time ever been to a spinning class.
And 5mins in? I felt like dying already. Muscles were burning, and THEN our dearest instructor Kat started getting us to double our spins. Kat was amazing, and made me realized the instructor was the most important element in the class. She motivated each and everyone of us just enough to keep our head above the water, but not to drown us with anything too harsh.
I was just able to keep up an hour long lesson, (and I said I’m not the most athletic person!), but looking back from the second I started, I didn’t stop pedaling at all for an hour. It made me felt really good, and surpassed any instructor-​based fitness classes I have ever been.

Super convenient for those working in central (on Queens Road, opposite the Landmark mall), XYZ provides a great option for those looking for a spin fix during or at the end of the day. The classes are similar in style to those I have taken in the UK with speakers pumping up tempo tracks to get you in the mood and the lights off to keep you focussed on what you are doing. They also hire bike shoes for those that don’t own a pair with Look cleats.
The bikes are great and easy to set up. The only improvement I could suggest would be to include a power meter so that you can see exactly how hard you are working. However, this is not a deal breaker as the classes are not purely about cycling as you use dumbbells midway through to get an all body work out.
The facility as a whole is clean and modern with air conditioning doing its best to keep you cool no matter how hard you work and the staff are all really friendly and will help you get your bike setup if you don’t know how. So no excuses, get spinning at XYZ!

Cycling studios have been a huge hit in the United States. I’ve heard lots about them and have taken a few classes at my local gym, but I’ve never actually been to a specific cycling studio before. My friend who goes a lot, told me about XYZ in central, located in the new world tower and I was very curious to try it out. Plus I’ve always wanted to expand physical activities beyond Yoga so naturally, I asked my friend to take me and boy what a work out it was!
XYZ is a hardcore, very pumped up, with extremely certified cycling instructors. I took the 7PM class taught by Rachel. She is extremely friendly and SUPER fit. I was very excited to try her class out. My friend says that she is the best instructor there, because she plays really good music.
The concept in itself is pretty genius. You have a room full of stationed bikes, with neon lighting and an instructor in front of you. Its dark, like a club, the music is amazing and just fills you with adrenaline. Rachel is super good and she really knows how to push and pump a class. I was pretty winded after the work out. It’s definitely hardcore cardio so if you want to get a vigorous cardio work out in then this is the place. First timers are $ 200 plus they give you shoes and butt pads for free. You should bring your own water. You are bound to sweat a lot and be prepared to have a lot of fun. It’s an intense workout and I totally get all the hype. I don’t know how it compares to soul cycle in the states but it totally beats running on the treadmill for a cardio workout. Try to take Rachel’s class if you can! Her music is super.
