This Yata shop is one of the newer shops that have come since Yata decided to expand itself outside of Shatin. It is probably the biggest chain store in Taipo at this time and if you come on the weekends it does rival Shatin for how packed it is. I think the fact that it sits on a much smaller tract of shopping space means that this shop feels quite claustrophobic– maybe its just me. The other thing with this shop is that everything is on promotion the whole time– its not only over the major festivals that you get little pop up stores along the corridors as such; once you come up from the underground carpark you are hit with a barrage of items being on promotion. The lack of space means that a lot of the promoters are quite in your face. Times are hard I suppose– but I very nearly came back with a Nespresso machine when I went there for a pack of chicken wings. Speaking of food, there is the ever excellent Yata supermarket upstairs which I think redeems this place. If I was looking for a shopping mall, I would look elsewhere but this supermarket beats everywhere in Taipo hands down in having the widest choice of cooked and fresh items. Good for lazy people like myself who can’t really cook much more than a pot noodle. Yata’s brand used to be a bit more upmarket and this shop shows that it is trying to go mainstream– but is it a good thing though?
