I went here following it winning Best Curry in the North Award a couple of years ago. It was majestic. It has a really unique feeling inside, it’s not an old ‘mile style’ place but isn’t as trendy as say Zouk. It also boasts a cool beer garden… yeah a curry house beer garden! Like all the best curry places it does the staples excellently and offers a huge range of lesser known dishes. Unless you’re driving it’s a bit out of the way but it’s perfect for groups and therefore justifies the trip if you book it for a birthday or something. When I went last it also had Cobra on draught… mmmmmm yum

An excellent place to eat authentic Indian food. I live local so eat here quite often, and each time we visit we always comment on how excellent the food was. The staff are always extremely friendly and always make sure you enjoy your food. I once got two free bottles of wine after I went to pick up my takeaway and had to be kept waiting for a little extra as it was very busy. The two bottles of wine came to the same price as the food that we ordered so we were very pleased. Basically, if you want authentic high quality Indian food then visit Indian Ocean, you will not be disappointed.

Four of us ate here for dinner, the poppadoms were fresh and tasty(crunchy not rubbery), our mains were hot, freshly cooked and delicious. Hubby had chicken tikka masala, I had chicken korma(with pilau rice, garlic naan and roti) and both were devoured Price was reasonable and we’d definitely go back!

I have to agree with the previous poster regarding the extremely poor service at this establishment, given my experiences last night. I was one of a party of 14 that had booked to celebrate a friends birthday. We originally booked for 7:30pm, but were told some days after placing our booking that they couldn’t accommodate us at that time, and they shifted our booking to 8:30pm. We arrived in plenty of time for our 8:30 booking, but were told that the table we had booked wouldn’t be available until 9:20pm eventually we were finally seated at 9:40pm. The staff were extremely unapologetic and rude, displaying a ‘what’s your problem WE’REBUSY!’ type of attitude they most certainly did not seem to care that they had ruined my friends birthday celebration and reduced her to tears. Eventually, after complaining most vociferously to the manager, we were offered a free round of drinks in compensation. We were all very unhappy at being kept waiting so long, and given the wait for the table, decided only to order a main course, our order being placed at 9:50pm. Our food eventually arrived at 10:40pm, and was adequate at best the pilau rice was stone cold, although, to be fair, the lamb tikka balti I had ordered with it was nice enough. All in all an unhappy experience that we will most definitely not be repeating. Oh, and as a side issue one of our group went to the ladies, and as she came out, she caught one of the staff taking a surepticious sip out of a drink from a tray she was about to serve hmmmmmmmm. Most certainly not worth travelling 40 miles for.

I’m writing this review for those people who are considering Indian Ocean in Ashton — as a Take Away option. It has been some time since I have dined here but I get a take away quite regularly so I will focus my review on this. The only part of the dining experience I have seen recently when I’ve been to collect my order, is in a bar area which they have separate to the restaurant for customers to wait in if their table is not yet ready. My only comment about that(if I were there waiting for my table), is I can clearly see that have a big plasma screen that sometimes shows football and shows such as X Factor and the music they pipe in there always seems a little too loud — it’s not the kind of pre-dining experience I would appreciate before my meal. Their take away menu however is quite extensive, they serve all the usual favourites and some more unusual dishes that I’ve not seen available at other local Indian take aways, a recent interesting find on the menu for me is the Irani Harri Botti, which is a mildly spiced BBQ’d chicken dish. Each and every time that I have eaten any of their meat and poultry dishes it has tasted like that are using a quality supplier, the meats succulent and flavoursome. I’ve not had any of their sea food options such as prawns etc but based on my other experiences I’m sure they will be just as tasty. If I had one criticism about the food was that sometimes it’s not completely consistent, I think it depends which chef they have on and the size of his hands as one pinch of spices differs from one chef to the next. I’ve had exactly the same dish, with varying degrees of punch from the spices — but none of them unpalatable. Most orders take around 30 to 40 minutes until they are ready to be collected or delivered, which I think is a reassuring amount of time that food is obviously cooked to order and they have no shortage of orders to cook. I will definitely eat inside the restaurant again soon and when I do I shall update all you Unilocalers out there with my experience. In the meantime, for those of you considering the take away option, I can heartily recommend the Indian Ocean, Ashton.

I would not reccommend this place and I am so surprised at its excellent reputation. During my visit, the service was some of the worst I have had(one waiter rolling his eyes at my friend because she changed her order — BEFORE he had left the table to send it to the kitchen) and another waiter arguing with another friend of mine because she had written on the back of the bill(trying to work out payment). The food was FAR too spicy(and I like spice, but not when it ruins the taste of the meal. It ruined my fish dish) and actually not that great. It is the worst Indian restaurant I have ever visited and would advise you to steer clear. Very rude staff. Average food.

Indian Ocean Restaurant in Ashton-under-lyne is a great restaurant that serves in my opinion amazing Indian food. Firstly if you love curry then you will love it here, if you are not so keen on curry they have some other dished but they are known locally for their hot curry. Personally I like mine a bit mild so I have to be careful what imp ordering, the staff normally help you but at times they are a bit busy. The service is generally very good and like I said the staff will help you. For me the biggest disappointment was the length of time the food took to arrive at our table, I was starving when I went here so perhaps the delay in the kitchen wasn’t as long as I thought it was. The price in the restaurant is quite expensive and that is a bit of a disappointment. There are quite a lot of Indian restaurants in the area so price is a big ting to look out for.

Always been satisfied with the food and service. Alittle exspensive to ther restaurants in the area. The market leader though with the addition of the seperate bar with live music. Close to the town centre fora beer later inthe many pubs around.

Indian Ocean is located on Stamford Street in Ashton and is a fantastic Indian Resturant, this place has been open for years and I have never heard a bad comments. The food is amazing and so cheap they offer a set meal for £8.95 which consists of a starter, a large meal and a dessert. The décor is beautiful and the staff are quick and very friendly. A visit is a must!
