Jacquies has the biggest mangoes I’ve ever seen. And no, that’s not a euphemism: each piece of fruit is literally the size of a small American football — and they’re only £1.49 a piece. For such a small grocers, I was impressed by the selection of goodies on offer: monkey nuts, half dozen eggs, toilet roll, and a fine range of fresh fruit and veggies, of course. Jacquies is a neighbourhood staple, if the amount of customers passing through at 11 am on a weekday morning is anything to go by. The shop assistant carries on conversations at length with people of all ages coming in, which adds to the warmth and small-town feel of the place. Most importantly though, all of the veg here is outstanding — most of it looks fake to me, it’s so perfect. Although produce at Jacquies costs a bit more than your average Asda fare, it’s worth paying a bit more for fruit and veg that is far superior in size and quality.

I’ve shunned supermarkets recently in favor of good old fashioned greengrocers, fishmongers and other such things. It’s so great to have a little place like Jacquies at the bottom of my road. The fruit and veg is so fresh it’s still got the dirt on it and you can even haggle a little bit. They also get props from me for having really beautiful and slightly unconventional flowers.
