The food here is very tasty although a tad expensive. If u love meat and the current bbq phase Belfast is going through then you’ll love big als. Portion sizes are great and the daily lunchbox represents good value for money. The chicken wings are amazing

Very dear in price. The food is very nice but for a take away it is on the higher end of the price scale for Belfast. Would recommend to try at lunch as they do a lunch box which is worth the value. For those who want wings and burgers and don’t mind splashing out a little extra this is your place

Tasty, REALLYTASTY! I love going to this place as a treat because the minute you walk in the aroma of sizzling barbeque meat hits you. It is pricier than the average burger joint, but the quality and taste more than make up for it.

Big Al’s or Big Al’s BBQ& Burgers is a takeaway I have not tried until today due to its ‘meaty appearance’. As I’ve been vegetarian for nearly a year now it just hasn’t appealed to me. However, I thought I would give it a go today as I reasoned there must be at least one or two vegetarian options on the menu. How wrong I was! Big Al’s is a meat fest with not a single vegetarian burger, dinner or sandwich listed on the menu. Very disappointing. Thus I was left with the option of chips. Apparently even the beans have meat in them! The guy who served me(manager/owner/worker — not sure who he was) was extremely helpful and pleasant and did mention that he was planning to take time over Christmas to create a good veggie burger. It would be great if he did — especially if there were not one but maybe two veggie options! If this happens I will return and review them again. Unfortunately for now they are getting 2 stars only. The chips(skinny fries) and coleslaw I ordered were nice, just nothing special. However if I spotted a couple of vegetarian burgers or sandwiches appearing on Big Al’s menu I would return and try them as this takeaway gets good reviews from others.

I love big al’s! It’s perfect for any occasion. Lunch, dinner, hangover food, snacking, whatever! They have a great selection of burgers on their menu that they have worked hard to keep simple. It is simple BBQ based food and cooked over a long period to make their meat extra tender. I would suggest following them on Facebook as they put up weekly offers which as usually quite good. I would recommend getting the ribs and some of the buffalo wings to go with them. The owner is a nice guy as well and when they forgot my Coke one time he had it noted and sent it over with my next order along with some free wings.

I treat myself to a Big Als maybe twice a month. Have tried quite a few of the burgers which have all been so tasty, my favourite is the Texan burger. The seasoning on the fries is also amazing. Another choice has been the buffalo wings which was pretty hot for people who like spicer food! I am yet to try any of the dinners but wouldn’t doubt they taste great too. I understand it’s a take away, knew that from the start so wasn’t expecting to sit in– not the kind of food you would want to eat in front of a crowd anyway! Messy and great, up your face kind of food. Best enjoyed with a cold beer and some friends that won’t judge you for having sauce on your ear. Love it.

I was in another Belfast eatery and we got chatting about good Belfast food, specifically ‘big eats’ and the proprietors suggested I checked out Big Al’s. It shames me to say this but I had never actually heard of Big Al’s, probably because it’s deep in studentsville. I decided to gather together a few pals who I knew were fans of ‘big eats’ and we headed up to Stranmillis to check Big Al’s out. On entering big Al’s I was a little confused — it was called a restaurant to me so I expected to see a few seats and maybe even table service but when we got there it was only really a take away. They had a few ledges where you could perch and eat your food but there was no proper seating/eating area. Unperturbed we ordered, as to be fair the smell of cooking meat was making me salivate. I went for the Spicy sausage ‘dinner’. It was just over £6 and the portion was, as expected, massive. The term ‘diner’ basically means your meat comes with a side of either coleslaw or bean and chips. The meal itself was drizzled in BBQ sauce that was sweet and spicy all at the same time — really moreish. The sausage meat was cooked to perfection which made for a really enjoyable lunch. I would love to give five stars to Big Al’s but the lack of seating really let it down — even a few stools to wedge under the ‘perch’ would really improve it.

Big Al’s had a great selection of GIGANTIC burgers, ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, brisket among many other choices and great sides all slow cooked in their special roasting oven that leaves the meat very tender… Ordering was particularly difficult for me due to the amount of deliciousness on offer but in the end I trumped for the«Pit Burger», a homemade 6pz burger that had 7 huge slices of brisket in it, a MOUND of Tabacco onions and chipotle sauce that came to a measly £6.95 given the size… I love a burger and this was decent but not anything spectacular… I have it on good authority their wings are amazing so I shall try these next time I’m in Stranmillis… The place itself had no seats and is more of a chippy-like takeaway situation which I felt unnecessary as 4 table which a couple of chairs could easily be added to the shop for diners to enjoy their meaty feasts… We ended up sitting at picnic tables across the road outside of centra tho a short walk to botanic gardens would be a great place to chow down in hindsight… Worth a try if you’re in the area!!!
