I go to the Rajput four times a year, strictly. It’s a birthday ritual for a group of us. This place warms my heart. It is all about substance and has total disregard for style. The exterior would not entice you in. If you were forced inside you would want to leave based on the interior. However if you were brought into this place blindfolded I believe you would be delighted with the indian cuisine that you were served. The staff are friendly, the food is tasty and they do a great lunch deal which is £6 for two courses from memory. The aloo chaat for starter followed by the chicken dansak is a personal favourite. I have no idea how this place survives though. Recently it has been as if the restaurant is open only to cater for us. Perhaps it is the take away business that keeps things ticking over.

Now when you walk by this place, you really wouldn’t think much of it. You wouldn’t think it was open if I’m honest! But they clearly don’t think they have anything to prove and have kept the ageing sign and the ageing décor. It’s once you taste the food that you realise that none of that matters at all. It’s fantastic. I had their Jalfrezi(lamb this time!) and it was brilliant. They sundries didn’t stack the bill up as they usually do and all the dips that came with the poppadoms where almost yummier than the meal. You really shouldn’t just a book by it’s cover and gave this place a try.

From the outside Rajput looks like the kid of place you’d rather avoid unless you wanted to see your food return again sometime soon. This is certainly a case of don’t judge a book by it’s cover! This place is great and serves high quality Indian cuisine at a great price and by fantastic and attentive staff! We avoided this place like the plague until a friend recommended it and I’m so glad we took the plunge! I got a Madras which was nice and hot and the chicken was perfectly tender and my partner being a huge vinadaloo fan, raved about his. We’ve been back several times now and the standards never slip and the staff even remember you! Fantastic!

It doesn’t look particularly inviting from the front, and I really think they could do more to entice customers in, just maybe give the outside a facelift or make it a little more modern, because after all, they are ona a very busy and popular stretch of road. But the food in here is what you really go in for, not the look of the place. Their service too can’t be faulted. I recently ate here and enjoyed an absolytely lovely Chicken Balti and the other half got his usual Chicken Rogan Josh and he said it was gorgeous too. The meat was tender and there was lots of it, which is the mark of a good Indian restaurant. This place goes to show that you really shouldn’t judge a book by its’ cover.
