Oh what to do when you’ve got a day all on your own and all to yourself? Arrange a lazy, self indulgent, café surfing, kindle reading, treat day — that’s what! Hence I ended up in Soul Food Café. It’s extra busy, extra noisy and filled with all sorts of people and chattering kids. Cosy, warm, welcoming with table service and free wifi. Soul Food Café is homely and lovely with quaint art hanging on the walls. On my visit today I had broccoli soup and a ciabatta roll filled with hummus, onion marmalade, roast peppers and salad leaves. It was heavenly, proper warming comfort food on a miserable, rainy November day. The Americano coffee is pretty good and there are quite a few vegetarian options on the menu too. Thank you Colin W and Brian H for the excellent recommendation! I noticed they had a chalkboard sign up declaring their first floor BYO bistro is open Fridays and Saturdays and you can phone 02890646464 to book. I’m returning — and very, very soon. Soul food indeed.

Loved Soul Food at its old location but the new place is fantastic — a really nice bright and airy space. The food is a great as it always was, perfect for breakfast or brunch on the weekend!

I haven’t been to Soul Food for ages and went today for lunch and I won’t be leaving it so long before I return again. The atmosphere was very relaxed, the service was excellent and my parsnip and corriander soup was perfect. My colleague had the chirizo casoulle(stew) and he thought it was great too. All in all a top lunch and not too hard on the wallet

The last time I was in Soul Food, we had to leave before ordering because my excruciatingly picky sister couldn’t find anything she liked on the menu. The waiter was so nice about it that he almost succeeded in making us not feel too bad at having made him go to the effort of clearing a table for us only for us to swan out again almost immediately. The menu didn’t appeal to my sister because a lot of it is a little bit different from the norm, and that just doesn’t wash with her. Previously I’ve had the mackerel with leaves and wheaten bread which makes for a rather different breakfast or brunch, and the soups are always inventive and delicious. The sandwiches are served in wholesome granary baps — lots of eating in them, and again the fillings steer away from run of the mill which makes a pleasant change.

I had a nice fry up here a few weeks ago when we decided to go into Belfast shopping for the day. The staff were nice but the fry was devine — it wasn’t too greasy and it was filled with my favourite feature of potato and soda bread — yum! It’s a bit out of the way and we only picked it as we were specifically visiting a shop near by! Surprisingly for 10am on a Saturday morning it was quite busy but yet the service was still quite fast. I noticed they also are open for lunch time and I think this is probably their main trade although they are situated next to Planks sandwich shop which also does good business so I’d say there is competition. If you are looking for corporate food delivered to your office they also provide this option. Anyway a lovely fry was had in a nice café — I will be back definitely if I am up that way!

Soul food really is food for the soul! They do awesome lunches here but I go for the fry! It really is fantastic! I find it hard to choose between here and The Other Place on Botanic Avenue. The staff are really great too and service is always quick, efficient and professional, with a bit of banter thrown in which is missing nowadays from many places! Its a shame they close so early as they’d do really well until 6 or 7pm I reckon. Esp if they done some good home cooked dinners for the after work clientele! But if you’re up this way and want a great breakfast of a nice lunch don’t pass the opportunity to call in here!

This place is located directly below my office and my colleague Grainne basically demanded I go in here to get something to eat because she really, really rates it so I checked it out. There is a really, laid back, tranquil, chilled out and friendly atmosphere and the staff are young, helpful and always polite when you drop in to get one of the legendary breakfasts. This place has the reputation for having the best breakfast in town and its hard to argue against that. The annoying thing is that it closes at 4pm becuse teh food is so good but this place really is top class to go for breakfast or lunch. Particularly if you get the prawn rissotto, it is spectacular. Well worth the trip up the Ormeau Road, and completely essential if you are up that part of town.

Soul food is a café with a difference. Apart from the usual run of the mill things you would expect in such an establishment you get a bonus. Great tasting food. Well priced for the quality, quite comfortable and with a mint blue cool decore. Worth a visit

This café serves excellent coffee and really good fresh food using the best ingredients. Breakfasts are particularly good but only served until 11.30. Quite pricey but worth it. It can get very busy on a Friday morning but there are plenty of tables so you’ll squeeze in somewhere!
