I have been to this pub for a few lunch time visits and once in the evening. For lunch, you get a massive feed but, quite frankly, it’s far too greasy and stodgy. I once even asked for a baked potato and salad, thinking it was healthy — the result was about two bits of lettuce, one sad slice of tomato and a ridiculously large amount of coleslaw and cheese, plus more cheese and butter inside the baked potato. I socialised here one evening on a work do, when we were basically intimidated into dancing by the female lead singer of the band who was shouting angrily down the microphone at anyone who wasn’t dancing. She wasn’t bad or anything — it was all current pop songs but I just wanted to chat with my work colleagues! The clientele is quite mixed age wise and it’s very much a locals bar. I wouldn’t travel across town to have an evening out here. Actually, not sure I would go again even if I lived locally.

From the outside the menu looked good and varied for the only pub on the Woodstock Road but I was a bit crestfallen to find a virtually empty bar and a restaurant with only three diners. Though we were almost too late at 8.15 for food on a Wednesday evening they served us but after an unpromising start I had a pleasant surprise. The main course of chicken and mushroom sauce was tender and well flavoured. I had a starter only of fried duck strips and vegetables with green lentils which I thought was imaginative on a pub menu and also very tasty, especially the lentils. For a starter it was a good size portion, quite enough for me as I’d been snacking too much not long before. So make sure you’re hungry enough to order both starters and main courses here. I came away satisfied by a meal, produced with no fuss, which could well compete with some of the more trumpeted pub food that is served around the city

This is fairly near where I work and so we went in for a spot of pub grub one day last week. It wouldn’t be a bar I would normally find myself in, being from a totally far away area of the city, but I was pleasantly surprised. The staff were really friendly and there was a good range of choice on the pub grub lunch menu — which is definitely a treat when you want something ‘moreish’ and really filling and hearty. The atmosphere was nice too — there is always some sort of sport on the television there from what I can tell, which isn’t my thing(being a totally girly girl) but the regular clientele seem to really enjoy it, and that’s part and parcel of a local pub I think. The premises are clean and inviting and the food was really satisfying. Thumbs up.

The Eastender is one of the only pubs located on Woodstock/Cregagh road in East Belfast. Actually it might be the only pub, which is strange when you think about it, as this is a fairly well trafficked area. The Eastender is open seven days a week and features entertainment on the weekends. The times that I’ve checked it out featured a rock/karaōke type DJ. They also have comedians, including one called«Wee Mac» that, unfortunately, I was never able to see. They’ve got plasma HIDef TVs on all the walls and show the major sporting events. In addition, they usually have drink specials on that make it a little easier on your pocketbook to go out and have some pints. A restaurant attached to the bar serves food, but you can also order the food in the bar half of the Eastender. They’ve got beer on tap, spirts and bottled libations as well. Weekend nights they’re open until 1am and sometimes have discos, which makes them just about the only place in the area to go and kick up your heels. Just let me know when«Wee Mac» is going to be there next.
