I am SOHAPPY that Bexleyheath finally has a decent sandwich shop! No more chains, yaaaay! So, Carved was started by a guy called Josh a few months ago and they do a variety of burgers, pulled pork sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, chips, different breads, cronuts from Rinkoff Bakery and the most delicious lemon and chocolate cakes and cheesecake you’ll ever eat. It’s magical. I don’t even know where to start with explaining how good this is. We went in last Saturday and ordered the salt beef and pickle sandwich, which is their classic and £7. It. Was. AMAZING. The salt beef was packed full of flavour and fell apart in your mouth. The mustard was so hot it made my eyes water. The pickles were the perfect contrast to the meat. The bread was fresh and soft. The whole thing was a complete and utter delight. While we were there, we saw Josh serve up a burger and chips using a blowtorch to melt the cheese and heat the meat. This guy is not only a great cook, he’s also insanely cool. And judging from the ooh’s, ahh’s and mmm’s, the burgers are just as good as the sandwiches. Because it’s run by one guy and is independent, they seem to be more open to catering to the customer’s needs. Well I mean that’s no surprise but Josh takes it to the max. A slice of chocolate cake is £2. A slice of lemon cake is £2. We only had £3 and wanted to try both so he cut us smaller slices of the two and let us chow down. You wouldn’t get that in Gregg’s, that’s for sure. And that cake was insane. The cake itself was moist and the icing was sticky and rich but not cloying. Exactly what you’d expect from Rinkoff, who supply him. We got chatting to him over lunch and asked why he opened in Bexleyheath. I live here but I’m under no illusions that it’s a quiet town and only in London on a technicality. We’re a Kent town in every other respect other than our fortunate location inside the M25. Josh says this is the new up and coming place though and it made sense to open here to cater for the people that don’t want to eat at Pizza Hut every night and want good food but can’t afford central London house prices. I love him already. We’ve walked past it a few times and to my shame, the thought in my head was always ‘It’s in Bexleyheath, how good can it really be?” I regret that thought so much because it’s months I could have been eating Josh’s delicious food. VISIT. And ask them for their recommendations if you aren’t sure. You won’t regret it.
