This is a good pub for a few drinks before a night out. On some days the quality of cientele can be offputting epecially when all you can hear is «F-this, F-caant, F-you…wheres my gear gone you f-in caaaant». The drinks are good value and they have undercut the local Wetherspoons on some drinks(at the time of writing). The pub could do with a refurb though and the toilets(as in most pubs) are awful. I have this thing about pub toilets, if it’s a number 2 I have to check them out before I go, sometimes I hold it a whole night until I get home. I don’t think that is very healthy but hey ho. They often have live bands/DJ on Friday and Saturday nights which livens the place up, although I am sure that for a lot of the regulars the Class A’s have already done that for them. Meow! oooh you Bitch! All in all a pretty decent pub when the atmosphere is right and there is a full moon.

The Golden Lion has had quite a varied history with several owners over the years and did used to have a reputation as a bit of a fight pub. However, the current manager, Terry, changed all that years ago. They cleaned up the décor and introduced live bands, better TV’s and quality beer. You can also get reasonably priced food here but I’ve never eaten it so I can’t comment on what it’s like. We used to go here every week, often more than once(alcoholics! Us??). I think we still have the record for the largest bar tab(oh the shame). Always found it really friendly with a good mix of people there and excellent bar staff. Yes it can get very packed at weekends but not overly so. The crowds never seem to get violent, despite other comments here and on those busy nights extra security is on hand. We’ve found this to be a nice in between pub, it’s not quite an old man’s boozer and it’s a long way from the kiddie bars further up the Broadway. Check it out, we’ve always enjoyed ourselves there and was our place to go before Nyne’s opened. Sorry Terry.

The Golden Lion wouldn’t be my first choice for a drinking location in Bexleyheath. The pub itself was okay, there was a pool table and a big screen which was easy enough to see, but the clientele made me feel quite uncomfortable. They were quite a young crowd who seemed to prefer shouting at each other as loudly as possible as opposed to talking regardless of the distance between them and in a few cases their aggressive tone made me feel a little on edge as it sounded like they were after a fight. It might not be like this on all occasions but after my visit, I was hardly keen on going back to see. It is within walking distance of Bexleyheath’s livelier venues and The Golden Lion looks like it is a starting point for most people’s evenings.

The Golden Lion is one of a few pubs on the main stretch known as The Broadway in Bexleyheath. Close to the local Wetherspoons, it offers a slightly more attractive atmosphere with the addition at the back of a pool table and a small beer garden out back. The crowd is mainly relaxed and the service is friendly. It’s useful if you work in the area for a quick drink or a cheap lunch, but I think the best that can be said for it is, even though it’s more expensive, it still makes a change from always going to Wetherspoons!
