That’s right, The Pyramids, In Birkenhead! No, not the 8th wonder of the World, The infinite wonder of Grange Road!
Well Birkenhead High Street sure is becoming more smack head ridden and derelict, but I must say, the Pyramids is looking cleaner and busier than ever.
I hadn’t been back to Birkenhead for a good five years but was pleased to see that the Pyramids has all its outlets filled and seems a lot more secure and clean than I remember it. It has a food court, hairdressers, Marks and Spencers, Bodyshop, Dorothy Perkins, and a host of other retail outlets within minutes of each other.
I guess it’s one of the nicest places to shop in Birkenhead as you don’t feel as though you’re about to get asked for spare change or mugged at any given moment.
Given that, it’s still Birkenhead, so do yourself a favour and get the train over to Liverpool! It’s much nicer!

Pyramid Shopping Centre is certainly no Liverpool One! With average décor and cafes, it’s nothing special. I’d say it was like a rubbish microcosm of the Trafford Centre in Manchester.
Anyway, that’s maybe a touch harsh. Pyramid does have a nice array of stores, such as Marks and Spencers, Republic, The Body Shop and Boots, but nothing that gives it that sense of ‘je né sais quoi.’ No vintage boutiques. No specialist jewellery stores. I think I’ve spotted a gap in the market in Birkenhead. Vintage vendors should make their way to the region as soon as possible.
Pyramid is nicely looked after though, very clean, in fact I’d say it was practically sparkling!

If you like the usual shops like Marks and Spencer, Primark, Waterstones, etc. than you’ll love the Pyramids. They have pretty much all the general high street shops. There is also a food court upstairs.
There isn’t as much here as there is in Liverpool One, for instance, but there is still quite a lot and it makes a fun day shopping in Birkenhead.
However, if you prefer smaller shops and independent shops, you might prefer to check out the Grange Shopping Centre nearby, as well as the Birkenhead Market.

Until earlier this week, the last time I was in Birkenhead was a good decade ago and I was surprised to see how much the image of Birkenhead has improved, certainly in terms of the main shopping areas. It was so long ago that I’d actually forgotten my way around, so I needed to refresh my bearings once I set myself on the opposite side of the Mersey!
One place which stood out from the rest had to be the Pyramids Shopping mall. I was impressed by the design of the mall with its high ceilings, letting in sheds of natural daylight for a pleasant shopping experience. In particular, the food court was attractive offering a wide range of restaurants to suit a variety of tastes.
Although not the largest of malls, Pyramids does host a spectrum of trendy shops and not just branded clothes stores (like most these days), thus there is that striking balance which I feel a successful mall should have.

1980s, relatively small shopping centre with all the usual high-​street shops and nothing whatsoever to do with Egyptian landmarks, it offers absolutely nothing that you couldn’t get on any high street in the country.
Last time I was there, parking was, unlike many shopping centres, still charged for. A convenient place to go if you live in Birkenhead, but not worth traveling any distance for: go to Liverpool instead.

I love the pyramids, it’s not Liverpool 1 but it’s small and friendly and there are plenty of places to stop for a coffee. It has all the usual high street shops, next, dorothy perkins marks etc, Parking is not a problem, I have never seen the car park full, eve at christmas. Definitely worth a visit.
