I moved to the area recently and thought brilliant. This quaint looking coffee and sandwich shop on my doorstep. Had a few sandwiches from there so far and while tasty are nothing special. Their cake offering looks pretty big standard like you’d see in a big chain coffee store. That said prices are good. My biggest gripe is their opening hours. They close immediately after lunch. No chance to pick up a late lunch even. But this is in line with all the other cafes and sandwich stores nearby who seem to only cater for the office workers lunch break and not their Hometime food needs nor the needs of local residents. Would I recommend it? For a fairly average sandwich experience yes. For the quaint sandwich shop it would claim to be no.

I’ve passed this place every day for 2 years before eventually popping in to check it out. They have been on this corner in the Jewellery Quarter, right by St Paul’s Square for as long as I have known but of course now have competition from several coffee shops in the neighbourhood. They have stayed true to their ‘sandwich shop’ beginnings to cater for the local workers but have moved with the times and offer enticing breakfasts and as well coffee to the locals. They also have a couple of tables outside and it’s not a bad corner to sit on, leading as it does to St Paul’s Square. The newest hotel on the block, Bloc Hotel(ahem) which doesn’t have it’s own restaurant have been raving about them too which is high praise indeed.

Situated in one of the back streets, 5 minutes walk away from both the centre of St Pauls square and the Jewellery Quarter, this little café offers a great selection of food and a quality service to match. If you’re in need of a breakfast, they make a great sausage and egg(the egg is always really runny!) sandwich. I tend to go here for lunch as they offer a great salad box. In the fridge counter, you’ll find a selection of exciting salad options which include vegetable cous cous, potato salad, chopped apples and other tasty choices. The only downfall of this place is that the salad box comes to around £4.70 which is too expensive for me to go here everyday. It’s a nice treat though!

From the outside Mr Pickwicks looks like a great little café for a cuppa, sadly once inside it has the transient feel of a take-away café. I’ve only ever popped in here a couple of times for a coffee on the go, and with a sign out front declaring ‘proper coffee’ available it gives you hope for a good brew. Sadly I was left disappointed. I’m not sure if the guy who served me is normally the cook or whether they were shorthanded but my Vanilla Latte was just meh. I can honestly say i don’t think i’ve ever been asked how much vanilla before and do I also want sugar. Having said this the coffee itself was tasty, it was just the vanilla part of the latte that was a fail. Although i haven’t eaten here they seem to do a good range for veggies and the food is generally cheap to eat here. Whilst they do have places to sit outside as well as inside, it’s small size and busy lunch queues does make it feel too crushed for a relaxing bite to eat. Worth trying if you need something on the go but unless you are passing through or work over the St. Paul’s, Jewellery Quarter area it’s a bit out of the way to make a point in visiting.
