Ahhhh… St Paul’s Square… The last surviving Georgian square in Birmingham and host to a range of bars, venues, pubs and restaurants. There is something to cater to everyone on this little square, but this is ultimately the cheapest venue of the lot of offer. From the outside this is a well presented pub(complete with faux Grecian pillars) and is fairly well looked after. There is a small beer garden to the rear(in the carpark), which is the perfect location to grab a glass of wine or a pint of ale in the warmer weather. It’s not much; but there are some tables and a few plants. If you want a beer«garden» rather than a «decking area», this is the only place to go in the St Paul’s area. The interior is quite bland and a little tired looking. As mentioned previously, it’s a perfectly serviceable venue but has very little atmosphere to it. The food here is served all day long and, again, is fine. Nothing to shout about, but if you want reasonably priced tasty pub grub; it’s not a bad choice for a venue. This place is always kept clean and the staff have always been quite friendly, chatty and helpful when I have visited. You can pay less than £3 a pint here(a rarity in the JQ) and they have special offers on wine on certain days(Tuesdays and Thursdays) with 50% off selected bottles. They also do offers on sparkling wines and cocktails(but I have never ventured a cocktail here so cannot comment on quality). I’ve not really got a lot to say about this place… I have been many a time and always found it exactly as expected. The staff are nice, it’s clean and the prices are good. In summary, a nice place to grab a bottle of wine with a friend and catch up, but not recommended as a great place for a rip-roaring evening out.

For me, this pub is synonymous of one single thing: it is where I can find Jeremiah Weed, the drink of gods. Well, if it is not the ONLY place which it is sold, that was the place I heard about it for the first time. So, any time I step on it, Jeremiah Weed, it is! It is the taste of Tennessee in Jewellery Quarter! And this weekend I have chosen The Ropewalk for having a special meal to celebrate the 76th birthday of my «English mother», my dear auntie Kate. We have looked plenty of menus in the Jewellery Quarter area and ended up here not just for the reasonable price of the food but also because the menu options. It‘s a pub meal menu, but with more meal deals than expected. 80z Rump steak for almost £9? Hell, yeah! It is a good price if you consider the other places to eat around St. Paul Square. And the food is delicious with also considerable salad and chips portions. And if you have room for puddings, ask for the Vanilla cheesecake. A light and good dessert. I have tried the light bites at RopeWalk before and the Bachos(yes, it‘s not just Nachos. Check the menu!) were pretty fine. It helps if the weather asks a good beer garden. They have a perfect patio for the warm days. Packed, of course! It‘s a quite lively pub in the evenings but during the afternoon(if the weather is not helping) it can be an excellent option for a family meal. I always have my Jeremiah Weed fixing to have a complete Ropewalk experience and it didn’t matter if the weather helped or not.

I’ve been here many a time over the years, and ended up here a few weeks ago whilst looking for a pre-cinema meal with a friend. We wanted ‘cheap and cheerful’ and The Ropewalk is good for that. The food is typical pub grub, reasonably priced, plenty of meal deals to participate in if you’re with someone, and service is pretty efficient. If you’re a real food snob, then it won’t be for you. It’s tasty, but its certainly not gourmet. Good value for money though and fabulous if you’re in a bit of a rush.

This place looks lovely from the outside, and the décor inside almost keeps up with expectations, plenty of comfy seating and the wooden paneling gives it a slightly sophisticated feeling. The menu isn’t particularly inspiring, but the food is priced very reasonably, unfortunately I can’t comment on how tasty it is. We popped in to the Ropewalk for a quick bite and natter about 5pm on a Saturday evening, but you would have thought it was more like 11pm, the music was sooooo loud you really couldn’t hear yourself think, never mind talk to each other, and that was before it got busy. Finished our drinks and left sharpish.

I love nothing more than supping on a bottle of good tasting lager and watching the world go by. When you walk through the large double doors here, you enter a warm open-spaced room offering plenty of seating and great foody smells. They offer 3 bottles for a fiver between 5pm and 9pm but I prefer to choose something from the 241 cocktail menu — ALLDAYEVERYDAY! If only I could be here all day every day! I went out for a friend’s birthday recently and we started our night off here. As there was 15 of us we sat out in the patio. There was plenty of space for us to pass our cocktails to each other — just to make sure all the flavours were tested(wink, wink…) and the heaters actually worked! The only downside is there isn’t much of a view, well none really but in a situation like this we didn’t mind. When I come here with my husband we take up one of the smaller tables at the front of the pub. You have most likely walked past these tables when you’ve arrived as they are slightly hidden but trust me, these are the best seats in the house. Looking out onto St Paul’s Church, watching people play the table tennis table that is currently there(thanks to Olympic-fever hitting Britain) and relaxing in good company with a beer is what outdoor seating is all about. As the evening draws closer the Ropewalk starts buzzing. More so of a weekend as people gather for the live entertainments. It’s a great spot to grab a bite to eat before you head out on a big night. The Jewellery Quarter is well-known for its popularity with hen nights and stag parties but don’t worry most groups pop in for a quick drink and carry on out into town.

I headed here hoping to get some kind of food(brunch or lunch, not fussed) but when sitting down inside the darkened interior I was once again disappointed to see that the menu has loads of exciting options for meat eaters, or those who eat cheese. My choices were limited to just cobbling together some fried extras(eg, chips and maybe soup, or breaded mushrooms and wedges) or having a boring old bean burger. No matter how they’re described, on the whole, bean burgers all taste identical. Yawn! So I was disappointed by what they had to offer me foodwise. Otherwise, the pub had a lovely relaxed atmosphere, standard bar offerings, and my other half really enjoyed his gammon steak. I just wonder — how difficult is it to just add a veggie chili to the menu? Or something — ANYTHING — that doesn’t centre around cheese or being deep fried?!

I love the building in which this pub is set and the owners have done well to keep it as much to its original Georgian speck as possible. I popped along for some lunch in the recent fine weather, we sat on the patio area at the back which is gorgeous, it makes for a smoking area too, it has heating when needed. We went for the Mediterranean Sharer, £9.95. Salami, halloumi, mixed olives, roasted pepper with tortilla cones, garlic ciabatta, with hummus and tomato pickle. It was very tasty, though it was obvious the portion control police were on duty that day! But i won’t hold this against them because the service was great the atmosphere was relaxing and the whole experience was well worth the visit.
