I had seen this pub whilst passing into The City by car, but had never been down on foot before until last night. It is what they call ‘a hidden gem’. A traditional pub that hasn’t been spoilt at all, with old plates and toby jugs still hanging above the bar. The atmosphere was friendly and the staff welcoming. It was surprisingly busy for a Thursday I thought, but then it was jut before Christmas. Nevertheless, we still found a table. There wasn’t a huge range of drinks on tap, but then maybe there doesn’t need to be. The pub isn’t that big after all. They were still serving food until 9 pm I noticed and it looked quite tasty. Worth the walk from the City Centre.

Love the atmosphere, the friendly staff and customer. Sometimes you can go into local pubs and feel like you are intruding, but here we were welcomed with open arms. I couldn’t spot any beer I knew I liked, but I was given recommendations and a taste and soon found something to drink. I also had a pie and chips, it was one of the best pies I have eaten out, can only be describe as good home cooking. A pub I can see myself spending wintery Friday nights in.

The Bull is a hidden gem, just off the main drag in central Birmingham. Tradition oozes out of the mahogany wood as one walks in. The kind of pub one expects to find in a quintessential British village, The Bull has remained untouched by the gentrification, modernisation and poncification that has effected the vast majority of the city centre. Remember when pubs had stuff on the wall that wasn’t just advertising product? Ornaments, jugs, picture frames, all that stuff pubs used to have. You’ll find them here without a hint of post-modern irony or kitsch pretentiousness in sight. The pub is a regular in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide for the quality of ale served. Don’t expect the latest ‘craft’ beers, nor a huge beer menu to peruse. Rather a couple of trad ales in consistent condition, along with traditional ciders, along with the usual offering of spirits and macro keg. I didn’t ask to look at the wine list but expect they have a choice of white or red. I generally opt for Adnams Broadside, which has a soft spot for me, as it was the first beer I had after my daughter was born. I’ve not tried the food but it all looks like good no-frills, homemade cooking, with a changing chalked-up specials board.

A lovely quaint and homely pub run by the delightful Rose McCann. This is by far my favourite pub in Birmingham, tucked away in the historic Gun Quarter yet only a stone’s throw from the city’s business and financial district. A good selection of ales and hearty homemade food comes highly recommended a real gem.

I LOVE The Bull for a drink — but sadly not for anything else. Whilst their menu is large and full of ‘home cooked dishes’ — that also means limited vegetarian options(do I sound like a stuck record? It’s a constant trial for me to eat out!) and what few they have are very uninspiring. Macaroni cheese and lasagne are both fine if you eat cheese. so they’re out for me. That leave me the option of a veg curry or a veggie burger. If I want a curry, I’d prefer to get one from an Indian restaurant where I can select a specific type, rather than generic curry. Veggie burgers, as I’ve mentioned before, are always boring and uninspiring. I’d definitely recommend coming here for a drink, and to feel warmly welcomed by the staff — but if you have any specific dietary requirements like me you’d be better off going elsewhere — or at least scouring their menu before going in!

Yet another fine example of a classic typically English pub. I love everything that has a bit of history or a story to it. From vintage clothing to antique jewellery, older the better I say and when it comes to drinking establishments, even more so. The Bull looks really cute from the outside and has been maintained well throughout the years. When you walk in and head to the bar, be careful not to hit your head on one of the many antique jogs dangling down! There’s also a range of fine china on display which gives it a feel of ‘just popped down to Nan’s house’ which I love… Just be careful not to get too drunk and break anything as that would be disastrous! The friendly landlady will whip you up a spot of lunch ranging from a classic sandwich to a nice hot chicken salad. Being a local pub, they also offer home cooked meals which just add to the authentic feel of the place. Get fully involved and check out the Black Country faggots!

Without a doubt my favorite pub in Birmingham. It has a great atmosphere and the best service. I’ve had a meal once here and it was fantastic! It’s on my short list of regular places.
