I would describe the Highbury as a locals pub. Not that I wouldn’t visit the place as I have but it seems to run on it’s regulars. And very well it does to, with family fun days and Karoke evenings being regular events at the Highbury. It’s location sees it located conveniently opposite a quality chipshop and along a cycle route so it’s a nice place to stop off on a walk. It’s a pretty routine bar but that can’t be said for it’s choice of garden pets. Unless my eyes decieve me I have seen a donkey in the pubs rear garden only until recently it was replaced by a serious looking dog. Nevertheless the pub offers what you would expect, pint measures of cold lager. Best enjoyed on a summers day, this is a pub which won’t go out of fashion as it no doubt does it’s best to avoid such things. All hail the Highbury!

When you move to a new area you scope out the lie of the land and this leads you scope out the pubs. Pretty soon after moving to Selly Park I realised that the quickest way to walk to Kings Heath and Moseley was along Dogpool Lane, and then Dad’s Lane. This naturally lead me pass The Highbury on foot for the very first time in my life. It would have been rude not to check it out, and I discovered that it’s not all that bad, so I’ve been back on a few occasions, just to break up the journey home from The Heath. The Highbury is a traditional pub with a loyal crowd of locals that offers a friendly welcome to interlopers. The beer is good and the inside is cosy and what I would call a proper pub. There’s a fairly decent seating area out the back that is a nice place to sit on a summer afternoon. If you’re passing, I’d recommend you drop in for a pint. Best of all? From time to time there’s a small horse in the back garden. A real, actual horse.

The Highbury Inn is the kind of place which I would describe as a bit of an old man’s boozer. That is in no way a criticism though, it simply means that it is small, relaxed and comfortable allowing patrons to sit back and savour the flavour of a good old pint. They seem to have a pretty loyal customer base in the local area but that doesn’t mean that new faces aren’t welcome to go along. They’ve got some good outdoor seating and on a nice day it’s a really pleasurable experience to take a pew on a bench outside and sip away at the amber nectar. Best of all its opposite a chip shop so after a boozy evening you can get something to soak it all up.
