My Dad told me that Borehamwood is becoming the fastest growing Jewish town in London, which is surprising, because technically the Wood is actually in Hertfordshire not London. Anyway pedanticity aside, since I moved away ten years ago, the place has changed a lot. As I child if I wanted to dine out in Bwood, we just had to settle for Wimpy burgers on the high street as the only culinary option(- it’s kinda a restaurant as they have cutlery). Now days there are cafes, sushi places and *gasp* at least *two* restaurants on the high street. Oh Em Gee. Even better — there are delis like this that serve delicious non kosher jewish food. I had the chicken soup and latkes — both rather tasty. I’ve had so many disappointing chicken soup experiences at higher end central London restaurants like the Wolseley and Mishkins– it was so satisfying to finally get the soup akin to the type my yiddishe nana would make. With kneidlachs — light and delicious matzo-meal dumpling balls, floating in broth of Jewish penicillin aka the soup. The deli also specialise in salt beef — I’ve yet to sample this. All in all very good. the service could be a little bit more cheerful and the décor could be a little less sparse and basic — but overall I am happy.
