Age Concern

I usually go to charity shops to browse through their book and DVD selection, or to purchase a few little trinkets, or to see if they sell some bit of old clothing that is so tacky that I just have to buy it. I found all of those things at this Age Concern.
Their DVD selection is sparse, and although their book selection is a bit larger, there still isn’t much there. But they are all well-​priced so it’s easy to walk out with a good pile of books for your summer reading without spending a lot. They have a decent selection of trinkets (I purchased a neat little key chain), and their clothing selection is fairly hefty, although some clothes in stock are downright ghastly. There’s a lot of variety here.

This is one of the two Brighton branches of the national charity for care to the over 50s, Age Concern. It’s situated on St James’ Street, only a few minutes walk from the city centre. Yet it has the feel of a far less cityfied store — by this I mean, in contrast to the fancy pants Oxfams of North Street and Western Road, you’ll find a hell of a lot of indiscriminate stock *selection* here. You’ll find random ornaments, some severely ugly clothes, and the odd bargain in the books section as not too many people seem to buy books from here. I was also in there once and the shopkeeper was complaining that all their stock kept getting nicked! I like the rough and ready feel of it, with little in terms of colour co-​ordination, and some pretty tasteless window displays, but definitely the occasional decent thing and more organisation than the chaotic Friends Shop across the road.
