Bang on the beaten track, opposite the town hall in Bartholomew Square, Art at Five is a cool, contemporary space featuring cool, contemporary artists. It’s all in the best possible taste and while the art on offer may not scare the horses it may calm a savage breast limpid landscapes, demure nudes, quirky characters. The gallery is a member of Own Art, the interest-free loan scheme operated by the Arts Council. The scheme allows you to borrow up to £2,000(or as little as £100) and pay it back in ten monthly instalments. Home and business consultancies are also available.

Art At Five is a contemporary gallery that has been exhibiting work by national and international artists since 2003. Whilst other local galleries showcase a mix of mediums including ceramics, sculptures and screenprints, AAF focuses solely on paintings. Exhibitions change regularly with recurring themes seeming to revolve around bold abstracts, unusual portraits, colourful landscapes, the sea and flowers. Having a strong bias towards pop art and street art, I have to admit the work isn’t my cup of tea at all. If you dream of waking up staring at an oil painting of vibrant poppies however, it’s worth checking the gallery out. Prices are moderate for original canvases and you can buy work in monthly installments through Art Council England’s interest free loan scheme, Own Art.

I’m not a fan of modern art… I know it probably takes a lot of skill, and it can be beautiful, but its rarely worth £500 of gorgeousness. Art At Five takes a more subtle approach to the movement, and offers some very very gorgeous paintings which have a very tactile and layered appearance… Of course, they subsequently cost £hundreds of pounds. The warm, welcoming colours would work in many rooms, but I doubt that many of these rooms owners would feel inclined to put that amount of money down for them… Still if you’re in the market to spend £600 plus on a fancy looking image, then this may be the place you find what you’ve been looking for. And anyone who plays Portishead in store is okay in my books.

The paintings in Art at Five are lovely, but quite expensive. Whilst some art galleries contain lower priced items like jewellery or ceramics, this one is focused solely on paintings. Several of the prints were of Brighton — my favourite being one of North Street near dusk. They least expensive was £450, and they went up to nearly £2000, so Art at 5 is geared toward the serious art collector. The woman working at the gallery was quite friendly, and was busy signing Christmas cards when I came in to look around — she gave me one, signed by the Art at Five staff. So, I feel a bit cosmopolitan now, with this artsy card sitting up on my microwave.

This is a contemporary gallery, which hosts some quite simply stunning images of an avant-garde, occasionally very abstract variety. The pictures really are beautiful, and I’m sure most, if not all of them, would look wonderful in most interiors. The price of the art here however, really is quite high, with all items around £1000 plus. Still, if you happen to have a few grand spare and fancy buying some sublime artwork, you should definitely try Art at Five.
