Brunswick Square is one of Brighton’s most desireable living locations, and for good reason: it’s one of the few squares in town where there’s no need to worry about people spoiling the ambiance with their loutish and aggressive behaviour. It’s far enough from the centre of town to avoid that kind of thing, and Palmeira Square seems to get most of the youths from this area congregating in it, leaving Brunswick Square to sit pretty. One of my favourite places to sit in Brighton and soak up the rays, although I really wouldn’t bother going out the way for a chance to perch. The strange thing about Brunswick Square, as well, is how uninhabited it seems: for a square surrounded by old Regency houses, now all broken down into sizeable apartments, there never seems to be a soul here, making it one of the quietest places in town to sit as well. This has been noted before here, it’s just a strange thing when you notice it.

One of Brighton’s most prestigious addresses, Brunswick Square is a beautiful square of well maintained Regency buildings. Painted in the area’s trademark eggshell yellow, most of the buildings have been divided into flats and apartments now but still reside an air of grandeur. There must be hundreds of people that live there but strangely, it’s possible to walk around the area without seeing a soul entering or leaving the buildings. Throughout spring and summer, the small park in the middle of Brunswick Square becomes occupied with locals lounging on the grass and having last minute picnics and barbeques with friends and family. Surrounded by benches, shrubs and trees, it’s also a lovely place to bring a book and catch some much needed rays of sunshine.

Built during the early 19th century Brunswick Square was originally part of the Brunswick estate, which was the first housing development in Hove. Its beautiful regency architecture and expensive lawn makes it a prime location for both house-hunters and picnickers. 13 Brunswick square is in fact a museum dedicated to regency life and design. Furthermore, the annual Brunswick festival is held here and it features live music, BBQs and more fun in the sun. It’s one of Brighton’s many grand squares and a must-see for any regency enthusiast.

Brunswick square is arguably one of the most beautiful areas in Brighton, whilst also being one of the least crowded of these beauty spots. I have fond memories, before moving to Brighton of staying with my brother and his then girlfriend(now wife) in their top floor flat in Brunswick Square, playing footy in the park and just chilling and reading on beautiful sunny days. In the summer especially, it’s a great place to nurse a hangover with a big group of mates, as it’s so near the sea as well as a lot warmer than the actual sea front. The properties are beautiful, with their Georgian grandeur, and slightly goldy/yellowy tint, and you can vividly imagine this place when it was built, with all of high society strolling arrogantly around the beautiful(I assume then, closed of) Park. Now of course it’s open to the public, and gets some good usage, however for it’s unique and relaxed atmosphere it’s not too crowded, therefore it’s just right.

Arguably one of the most desirable locations in Brighton & Hove, Brunswick Square is the bee’s knees if you ask me. I am lucky enough to HAVE to pass it on my way home, something I am extremely glad about. The central grassy area is pretty generous in size and offers a lovely place to sit and just enjoy some peace and the great feeling of being outdoors, whilst being in the middle of a busy city area. The Regency properties that line the Square are well maintained, offer great living accommodation and just look beautiful in their majesty. Could I afford it, I would definitely live here. In the meantime, I will just have to utilise this great public space and enjoy those fantastic sea views while I do it!
