As the name implies, Impure Art is an erotic art gallery that prides itself on stocking ‘anything from nude to rude.’ Tucked down an alley way off Ship Street, it regularly stops people in their tracks when they notice the sheer volume of flesh displayed in the window and on the walls.
A lot of the work isn’t to my taste but I imagine it probably appeals to body worshippers, exhibitionists, extroverts and regulars on the fetish and S/​M scenes. Alongside sensual and erotic paintings and line drawings, there are more graphic art prints, sculptures and photos by a mix of local and national artists. The best show to date however, has to be the collection of Madonna Nudes they exhibited as part of 2009 Brighton Festival Fringe.

Made famous recently for exhibiting the ‘Madonna Nudes’ collection Impure Art is said to be the UK’s only and if not best erotic art gallery. Featuring erotica from around the world Impure Art prides itself on dealing stylishly with the shady world of erotica, avoiding overly vulgar displays of flesh in favor of more tasteful, teasing works. If you visit and like what you see the managers can arrange for the featured artist of your choice to create a custom made piece just for you. Located by She Said in the south lanes it’s slightly off the beaten track so don’t worry about getting caught having a peek. If you tend to turn your nose up at the word erotic Impure art will change your mind.
