I’ve been using this laundrette ‘Laundromat’ in Powis Road Brighton for over 6 Years now. The fact that it opens at 7am every single day of the week is fantastic(last wash being 8pm). There’s always a machine or dryer available, and if I need change for the machines(you need at least 4 pound coins for the smaller washing machines) the owner always has plenty to exchange if he’s there. He has the smaller washing machines, up to two larger ones(which are only a pound more) to the one extra large washing machine for the more heavy loads. Each wash can take about 25 — 40 minutes depending on what settings and size machine you use. The dryers have visable timers and are £1 for 15 minutes, but for a bigger load I find that £2 for 30 minutes of drying better if you are drying jeans and towels etc,(but you can open the dryer doors to check your clothes then close the door and press the button again and it will continue the rest of your paid for drying cycle). The four large modern dryers are great as they have different heating controls and are easy to use. There’s magazines to read while you sit and wait for your washing to be done. They do service washes too at great prices compared to other laundrettes here. So, give it a try!

I bet someone in the 1960’s stated that the laundry would be a thing of the past n the turning of the next century. These public services are much used. It is not rare to see a laundry. One would think everyone could have their own washing machine in this age of technology. Bedsit land is very much alive. Lots of bedsits are now poshly called studio flats! These homes, I use this term lightly, are small and cannot house a washing machine let alone swing a cat in! So the laundry is very much alive and making a profit. And don’t expect them to have died out by the turn of this century. One trend that never dies is poverty and bad housing.
