The Daily Catch

Really nice juicy fish in crispy batter and the chips was fresh piping hot too.
I only give them four star because of the odour of cooking oil that stayed with me for the rest of the night.

I’m in two minds about The Daily Catch, the chips were freshly fried and not bad, but cost £2 takeaway for a minimal portion. We weren’t looking for fish this time, but this appeared to be a better deal, and also ‘fried to order’ (how many times have we been let down by fish that’s been sat around for an hour after frying?!).
I’ll happily give it another go (especially if you’ve been out for a few drinks…) but was expecting more, as often the more old the decoration, the longer a place has been going, and the longer it’s been serving good food to people. I fear that its proximity to a large number of drinking establishments is the reason for having been going so long, rather than quality.

This is our local chippy & how lucky we are. Having once been diverted to try another more famous Brighton Fish & Chip that friends living over by the level raved about, I can only say that The Daily Catch deserves the best in a Brighton title way more than Beardsley as I was pretty disappointed. We are obviously spoiled having this as our local :)
never disappointing, golden crisp chips, lovely fresh fish with the right amount of crisp golden & never soggy batter, good selection of extras, great mushy peas & curry sauce & I’m told the meat products are excellent too & we hail from the north so are very fussy about our fish & chips, this is probably the only one we’ve ever found in the south that compares to what we know from home
Staff are always friendly & very helpful & I’ve witnessed them dealing with some very rude & annoying customers, but always manage to do it with a smile & never a complaint

So it’s Brighton on a sunny day and I couldn’t avoid the cliché of eating fish and chips on the beach.
As a person who doesn’t go to Brighton often I had a quick look on Unilocal and zillions of fish places came up. Eventually someone in the group suggested this place as we were only looking for somewhere to take our food with us.
We turned up and ordered a lot of fish. I was surprised that they actually cooked the fish that time and it wasn’t already cooked and placed under heaters as in London. Eventually this resulted in crispy batter that didn’t separate much from the fish and nice, flaky cod that kept its texture throughout.
The squid was brilliant, I could eat a ton of that. It felt like it was deep fried in butter and it wasn’t elastic or chewy at all.
Chips were typical chip shop fare.
Pretty good.

I think I may have been a tad over-​zealous with my last review — written in my manic hungry state (I can get a bit excitable).
It’s not that great really, very average.

The Daily Catch could be renamed the Daily Yum Yum. The chips are yummy. The fish is yummy. The sausage is yummy. Reasonably priced too.

Sitting in a pub having just finished the first pint of the day, the desire for fish and chips on the beach kicked in. The trusty Unilocal app informs me that there is a well regarded fish & chips shop only a few doors down! Hurrah!
Admittedly, if I were passing here looking for some traditional fish and chips, I might not stop here. It’s got that plastic late-​night takeaway joint look to — slightly tacky looking. But, as the saying goes, never judge a book by its cover.
Some of the best fish and chips I’ve had. The fish was made fresh in front of our eyes — the large fillets were taken from the fridge, dipped in batter and thrown into the fryer. The chips were crunchy and had just the right amount of salt and vinegar in. Even the pickled gherkin we splurged on was fantastic. The only let-​down were the mushy peas — a little bland.
All in all, highly recommended. And only a few minutes walk to/​from the beach. Don’t be tempted into the extortionate tourist traps right on the beach — you’ll regret it.

The Daily Catch was my local chippy for almost a year, so I became rather emotionally attached to it. There’s not much in this world I enjoy more than a hot bag of chips with a jumbo sausage on a Friday night when I just cannot be bothered to cook dinner. The chips from here are absolutely awesome golden brown and they don’t go all soggy when you slather them with copious amounts of vinegar. Lush.
The only downside is that it closes WAY too early (at around 11pm) and there’s nowhere else on St. James Street you can get a decent portion of chips at an ungodly hour. I’m not talking about fries, which are ten-​a-​penny given the number of rubbish kebabbys around that area — I’m talking about chunky, solid, potato-​hewn CHIPS. They lose a star for that.

This is the best chippy in Brighton. No questions at all. The fish is as fresh as can be and the batter is nice and light and fluffy and not floating about in grease. Lovely chips and they also serve a really nice curry sauce.
Even the pies in here are great and should be enjoyed with chips and gravy (of course). They do have a good selection of fish on the board and even if you have to wait a while, they can usually sort what ever you want out.

This is a top quality, nicely designed chip shop located centrally within Brighton’s prominent Kemp Town area.
This is a clean and modern take on what is a most unclean of British traditions, gone are the newspapers wrapped around soggy and cold chips, The Daily Catch brings you a good meal for a good price.
I bought regular chips and battered cod, which cost me just over £4. That is pretty good, especially considering how much an alternative takeaway would cost elsewhere.
The staff are also pretty friendly, which makes me a bigger fan once more.

As fish and chips go, I used to be convinced that it didn’t matter where you went: always greasy, always vinegar-​y and salty, and never really that pricey. Coming to Brighton has shown me how many different ways there are to batter a piece of cod, and Daily Catch takes the ticket as one of my favourite fish and chip places. The prices are a tad higher than most of chippies I’ve been to, but it’s more than worth it: this is quality stuff.
Daily Catch used to be rated one of the best fish and chip shops in the South East, and it’s easy to see why: all of the fish I’ve had here has been very good quality: none of the skin or bones occasionally found in lesser chippies’ fare. It’s not quite the stuff you’d get at Fishy Fishy or Riddle and Finns, but it is better than you’d expect. Apart from the quality of fish, the batter and chips and so on is standard fare: nice, but nothing to write home about.
Apart from the quality of the fish, everything else here is pretty standard fare. The other food is fine, the service quick and efficient, the seating area quiet and pointless (take it home!), although the prices are a little higher than normal. However, the quality of the fish does make the whole thing so much better: such an imporvement on the fish and chips you can get from around the corner. Give it a try, next time you’re down Kemptown way.

This is a great chippy and my favourite choice of late night munch in Kemptown. The Chips are crispy and yummy and they do a very good Saveloy. It’s pretty reasonable price wise but because Brighton is a tourist hot spot none of the chippys rival prices elsewhere too well. The staff are always very friendly, and if by the off chance I can’t quite pronounce saveloy without a slur, never judgemental, which is very important when going for some fish and chips.

The fish n chips here were way more expensive than I remember Mum paying for our Friday night takeaway treat as a kid! I’ve only been once, and ordered the cheaper haddock and chips x 2 instead of cod, and it was over a tenner. I also had to wait ten minutes for it (not sure why as I used to work in a restaurant, and it took 3min 40 to make fish/​chips), and I unwisely ordered a cuppa tea whilst I was waiting which came in a polystyrene cup and tasted nasty (probably my own fault for ordering tea in a chip shop!!)… But criticisms aside, the guy who served me was friendly, and the fish itself was good.
