Well Done

Well done deserves it’s 3 stars more than most, in fact I’m really temped to give it 4 simply because there’s been more than once… at around 4am when it if wasn’t there I MAY HAVE DIED… But the less said about those times the better…
Oh! And I like the name!

A newsagents named after the same way I like my steak. The only thing special about this newsagents is its name (which, by the way, is a fantastic name). But, other than that, it’s business as usual. If it’s a late evening and you’re a bit hungry, you can grab a sandwich, or possibly some crisps, or possibly a chocolate bar, or possibly a Powerade. There is a magazine section that has all of the latest gossip mags. I purchased one magazine that told the REAL story behind the Ashley and Cheryl Cole split. If you need some quick to munch on, Well Done will definitely serve your needs.

I remember the first time I noticed Well Done… my friends and I laughed a little too hysterically for a little too long at a name which is essentially not all that funny. Yes… you’ve guessed it, we were drunk! We found it even funnier when the lighter we purchased had ‘well done’ printed on it, as if we were being congratulated every time we had a cigarette! In the sober light of day, this is just wrong! Well Done is very much a stumble in when you’re drunk and starving, pick up a packet of crisps, or something else equally unsubstantial, and stumble back out kind of a place.
You’ll find all of the usual newsagent/​corner shop stuff… magazines, tobacco, cold drinks, pretty unappetizing sandwiches and a giant selection of crisps, chocolate and biscuits. Everything makes sense except for the name… why oh why is it called ‘Well Done’? ‘Well done, you’ve made it this far in life’? Or perhaps its just ‘Well done, you’ve made it through the night’?

Well Done serves a purpose and doesn’t face too much competition — okay there’s a Somerfield or Morrison’s a two min’s walk in either direction, but if you’re in this precise area/it’s late at night/you’re too sloshed to navigate yourself elsewhere Well Done is the place for all your grocery needs! You wont find fresh produce, or daily newspapers I don’t think (try The Argus over the road for that). But you will find milk, loo roll, snacks, basic groceries, and a good selection of trashy magazines. If you go in at 2am and suddenly find these basic household goods far more entertaining than usual (perhaps if you have a camera you’ll pose with said goods), you’ll also find the staff are quite tolerant!

A pretty formidable-​sized convenience store in the centre of Brighton, Well Done is perfectly located for the times when you realise that before you embark on a night of drinking, you should eat a sandwich, or if you’re waiting for friends you can buy a magazine. You can buy cigarettes and alcohol here, but not Cigarettes & Alcohol, by Oasis: if you could buy music here this place would be perfect!
There is nothing extraordinary about Well Done it is just perfectly positioned for the passing night trade. I think the name is a self-​congratulatory gesture by the owners when they realised what a fruitful little goldmine they’d set up.
