The zipper had fallen off the zip on my favourite winter coat. I had 2 other quotes to replace it, one was for £20 and it could take up to 2 weeks depending on how busy their one seamstress was. I read one of these recommendations and drove into Bristol to Brunel Tailoring. I was quoted £10 and«sorry, it will take maybe one hour as we have another very urgent job right now». In one hour it was ready, the zip works perfectly. I will recommend them to others.

Brunel Tailoring is a curiously named business in more ways than one. As far as I’m aware, Isambard Kingdom Brunel didn’t apply his copious design skills to the field of couture! And being owned and run by an Afghan Family you wouldn’t expect this name to have been the most obvious choice. Established two years ago this small business has been doing very well. It’s forged friendships with other businesses on Gloucester Road that provide regular income, such as Billie Jean Clothing, another concern that is weathering the recession well. As well as making new garments and curtains from scratch, Brunel Tailoring have a nifty sideline in repairs and alterations. I’ve never taken advantage of their tailoring services, so I can’t vouch for that, but I had three items altered recently, all for the incredibly affordable price of £14.00! Saraj, the owner, comes from a family with a long tailoring tradition in his home country, and was savvy enough to work for an Italian tailoring company when he first came to the UK. When ready, he decided to branch out on his own. A brave move in a volatile economy! But at the price I am sure that he’ll continue to do well.

This shop seems slightly out of place amongst the endless burger and chip bars. The frocks and suits in the window made me anxious to go in, worried that I would not be able to afford tailoring from here. As I walked closer to the window I realised I had nothing to fear. The shop was soooo cheap! I needed some trousers shortening for work and was pleased to see it was only £9. They also do zip repairs for only £3. First impressions aren’t always correct!
