service poor, drinks warm not hot, our meals were much smaller than neighbouring tables, ran out of Sunday lunches so tried to blag us with strategically placed food on the plate but still charged us top dollar, last time they’ll rip me off!!!

Having moved to this area of Bristol 6 months ago I have been yet to find something with the quirky, alternative edge often found on my beloved Gloucester road, until now! I think the Kingfisher may have done it! The bunting and fairy lights drew my attention to it a while ago and with a lazy Sunday morning ahead we decided to pay a visit. I loved the layout, loads of different tables and chairs set up to make some cosy seating areas. They have some menus on the table but the main breakfast menu was up on a board next to the counter, we perused the menu then ordered at the counter. The staff were really friendly and agreed to tweak our order, adding extra mushrooms to the bacon sarnie. We sat on one of the sofas in the window and had a flick through the papers they provided, whilst waiting for our food which was only about 10 minutes. I had the smoked Salmon, cream cheese and cucumber bagel and my husband had a bacon sandwich with mushrooms. My bagel was really good, just the right amount of everything, there was a kind of sweet coating on the bagel which was really nice albeit a bit different! I am told the bacon sandwich was good too! With the food and a pot of tea for two it came to just over £8 so it was very reasonable. I am so glad to find this place, I think I’ll be a regular.

I’d been looking forward to trying out this new café in Fishponds as I’d heard good things and the area could really use another good place to eat. It didn’t disappoint and I think it it can only get better. The place is quirky, homely and full of a mush mash of random furniture. There is also a little kids section with a few toys, games and books, this was a massive plus for me as it’s often hard to keep a young child entertained for the length of a meal. The counter is laden with fresh home made cakes and a large board displays what’s on offer. I only really paid attention to the breakfast options as went for that purpose. The prices are pretty reasonable, I had scrambled eggs on toast with smoked salmon which was £5. The bread was lovely thick cut granary bread, the eggs done really well and a generous helping of smoked salmon on top. It looked pretty rustic but did the job perfectly. My partner had the full English(£7.50) and was very complimentary. This was all washed down with a coffee which was really good. I’m definitely looking forward to going back and hope to try the roast very soon.

The Kingfisher is a new café on the Straits in Fishponds. It’s a quirky little place with a mishmash of vintage furniture and décor throughout. The food on offer is everything you’d expect from a café and more. In the morning you’ve got full English’s, sarnies and bagels. There are daily specials for lunch and you can grab a roast on a Sunday. It’s also worth noting that as long as you’re eating there’s alcoholic drinks on offer with a selection of bottles of Butcombe, wine and all your classic mixers. My wife and I went for breakfast after wanting to check it out since it opened just before Christmas. We had a pot of tea each, Alice went for a salmon and cream cheese bagel and I had a bacon and mushroom sandwich(the option of a mushroom in a sandwich wasn’t on the menu but they were more than happy to accommodate!). I also had an orange juice. All the food was good quality, the sandwich came with thick bacon and crusty door stop bread and Alice was more than happy with the bagel. The tea came out served in vintage crockery. The orange juice came from concentrate but considering the whole lot came to £9 you can’t really grumble. My only gripe was the quality of the mustard that accompanied my sandwich, this was no Colmans! Don’t scrimp on your condiments! All in all a good cheap meal had in a cozy setting at the Kingfisher and the service was friendly and accommodating. The place does have a work in progress feel to it but we had a very nice breakfast and will definitely be returning. It’s a little different than most options in Fishponds and something the area has been crying out for, for a while.
