This little caffe at the bottom of Christmas steps is a right gem, filled with tasty foods and pleasant tunes, with great coffee and a cozy seating area. Free wifi too.

This café is a little pink gem hiding at the bottom of the Christmas Steps, lurking in the shadows of the Three Sugar Loaves pub. Wonderfully quiet and calm, it’s decorated in cleverly serene hues — pink with pine wood — and furnished with a variety of chunky tables and stools and squashy sofas and low tables. The comforting smell of baking potatoes fills the whole café, and the baristas greet you warmly as you drift hungrily inside. Just as I was making a note to myself that Munch Munch would probably make an excellent location for business meetings, given the large tables, quiet atmosphere and proximity to Broadmead businesses, in walked a group of three men in suits who looked as though they come here regularly for working coffees. It would also be great for groups, and equally for individuals seeking somewhere where they can tuck themselves away(the further you go inside the café, the more you literally become tucked away under the Christmas Steps) to read or write.

Only open since January Munch Munch is the newest business to the legendary Christmas Steps. Legendary is probably the right word because it certainly used to be quite a cool corner of town which nowadays is slightly losing said chic. Thank god then for Munch Munch. Their ethos here is simple but tasty, and they couldn’t have hit the nail harder on the head. The store is split into two sections: one side of the till makes and sells an impressive array of sandwiches; from vegetarian through to spicy meatball in a variety of bread from Bristol’s own Herbert’s Bakery. The other side of the till is the hot shelf delivering warmer snacks such as pies and sausage rolls. My favourite is an extremely satisfying combination of the two — the Breakfast Bap. To ease my conscience for consuming such a beast they serve first class coffee from a fair trade rainforest alliance, have comfortable seats and free WIFI access. Christmas Steps is getting cooler.
