The Oak Tree Café is a popular regular hangout for many people and is always busy. There are no quirks or exotic menu choices, just as good as basic can be! Good food, good service and good atmosphere. The place itself is a little bland but the fun-loving staff make up for this. My favourite deal here is the Toastie with any two fillings for only £2.50. I usually begrudge ordering tea when it is so cheap to make at home, but the Oak Tree Café serves tea for only 50p, brilliant!

Not too long ago I came up with what I thought was an ingenious and original idea to serve good decent food at ludicrously cheap prices. The idea being to make food for people not money, and the money will come. Since said brain wave however, many have followed suit. The Oak Tree Café is one such place. Some may call it bleak or sparse, and admittedly no money has been wasted on the interior. However for me the charm is its honesty. They serve nice, traditional British meals. We all know a box of tea costs a couple of quid in the supermarket, so why sell it for anything less than a few silver coins? The chocolate cake is also pretty scrummy, and the £1.50 price tag suits; friendly honest people selling friendly honest food. The mains, the dessert and the tea are all pretty good budget. The smiles, they come for free.

This café is endearingly unpretentious, and one of the cheapest places to eat on Gloucester Road. The menu is by no means varied, but boasts a few old fashioned British favourites, such as Cottage Pie, Sausage Casserole and Steak Pie(all with the obligatory four veg), priced at £4.50. I bought a medium sized fried breakfast here for £4.30 the other day, which came with a cup of tea, and was actually pretty huge(and damn tasty too.) The Oak Tree Café is usually pretty full and is popular with pensioners, obviously mighty pleased with themselves for finding a place that serves tea for 50p a cup.(Me, old before my time? Nah!)
