Recent Graduates of Dartington College of Arts, Openbatch are a fresh new theatre company with a focus on the contemporary side of things. Having seen how they are progressing with their current project, ‘Home’, I can safely say that we can expect great things from these guys. Using a combination of dialogue and physical theatre, they explored ideas and feelings around the idea of a home. The performance was both stimulating and engaging. Furthermore, I enjoyed the opportunity to observe a work in progress and am looking forward to seeing how they develop the concepts explored further. Apart from the crowd both in their approach and creative ability, Openbatch Theatre promise great things for the future. I’ll be watching them closely.

Openbatch Theatre are seven performers who specialise in contemporary devised theatre. The company work collaboratively writing and choreographing their pieces together. Bristol based, they have performed in Platforms at the Arnolfini and Tobacco Factory as well as BE festival in Birmingham and as far afield as Lithuania. I recently saw Openbatch performing their new piece ‘Home’ at Dartington Festival. The group looked at the concept of Home, what Home meant to them… What people do in the privacy of their own space, the place they call their own. It was intriguing, funny at times, whilst demonstrating an underlying interest in the unusual nature of human behaviour and interaction. They used repetition of movement, speech and song within this piece to create an enjoyable performance that was also suitably thought provoking. Openbatch are a great contemporary theatre group that are genuinely driven and passionate about contemporary theatre and leave you with food for thought, as well as this they inspire others to get creative offering theatre workshops in local schools. Check them out: Ustinov, Theatre Royal Bath Friday the 15th October. 7pm
